I am looking for a well built cargo carrier that installs on the trucks receiver hitch so I can put the generator and a few other items in it.

I dont want to put the generator in the camper due to gas smell.

I would like it to be very well built, not too heavy and not wobble and sway around when it is on the road.

Would it be better to have one in the front or the back?

Thanks

I have one of these from Cabelas.

It raises the carrier up to give better ground clearance and I mount it to my front receiver hitch.

Good idea, woodhog. In fact, it's a great idea since it's the same as mine.

The NL comes straight off the bed with no dropped portion and that gives me room enough to put a carrier on the hitch that will carry the small generator. I'll want it to have an enclosed waterproof and dust proof box, though, to protect the generator. I'm off pavement a lot.

I have used the one from Harbor Freight for a few years now and it is doing the job well. It is rated for 500 pounds, but I never put that much in. I carry 25 gallons of fuel or just a gen set and some firewood. Carry it on the front as it gets in the way for ingress/egress in the back.

Since you mention "off pavement" keep in mind that a hitch carrier mounted low under the rear of the TC will seriously cut into your departure angle.

A two point mounting system will significantly reduce the "wobble and sway". Here's the solution I came up with. Got the idea from JoeOchiki. Dave.

True, but it should be little worse than the very nice steps that NL has mounted on the rear bumper. The steps make negotiating some places a team effort with someone watching the back since I can't see them. The proposed carrier will fit under the camper, but in front of the steps. It will only be easily accessible when unloaded, but that is all I need.

I got mine from Walmart, $50 I then got out the drill and drilled a new hole for the hitch pin with it pushed all the way in , so it doesn't stick out from the receiver as far. 2 turn buckels to the underside of the bumper take out a lot of the sway and rattle.
