I called the museum and they tell me there is an "RV parking area" one block south of the museum but that's all the information she had. I'd appreciate any information about the area and museum.

Did you find the museum: "forget it", "interesting" or "can't miss"?

Is there parking available close to the museum that will accommodate a 38' fifth wheel (OAL ~55').

Is overnight RV parking available (boon-docking or hookups) in the same area?

Is anyone familiar with the parking area described above?

What kind of neighborhood surrounds the museum? Would it be relatively safe to leave the RV's at the "southern parking lot" to tour the museum or would it be a situation that it would make most people more "comfortable" if someone "stood guard" while others are touring?

Any other information would be appreciated. Thanks.

The museum is VERY interesting and is especially so if you're into history at all. It is located in Kansas Citys "River Key" district which is small shops, tourist attractions and farmers markets etc. It's an OLD part of town but it has always reminded me somewhat of a smaller version of the French Quarter in New Orleans only cleaner. Haven't taken our RV to the museum as it's only about 60 miles from our home but there IS a lot of parking in the area and have little doubt there would be parking for your motor home. The amount of pristine artifacts that they have recovered from the White Arabia is simply amazing. It is like an old time version of WALMART with the wide variety of merchandise it was carrying. Good luck and enjoy the museum.

NOTE: the museum FOOD court isn't much though so a short walk across the parking lot there are LOTS of great places to eat.

I'm not aware of any overnight parking in the area but, again, we weren't thinking about that when we visited. There ARE several campgrounds along Interstate 70 East of Kansas City a few miles and lots of camping in the Kansas City area.

With the caveat that my unit is only a 19 footer, my favorite techniques for visiting an attraction in a strange larger city & getting good parking (mild handicap limits my walking)....

a) Get there really early. I'll overnight in a truck stop, WM, or rest area within 30-40 miles, get up at 5-6 am, fix a cuppacoffee, and drive in and park. GPS really helps with strange streets before daylight. Then I maybe go back to bed for an hour or so, or take a shower, or get out and look around. It can be fun watching a city wake up... but that's me, maybe not you.

b) Recon the area with Google Earth. 'Street view' is really good for this. That's how I found out there was plenty of (car-sized) parking within a block of the state museums in downtown Raleigh.

Thanks but I "Googled Earth" and couldn't see any definitive "parking area" immediately south of the museum.

I would rate this as a "Don't miss". It is very interesting. When I was there I lucked out and got to hear a talk by the owner, the man who excavated the steamboat. I just looked at Virtual Earth and it looks to me like there are several parking lots close. One off Grand just south of the Museum and another just north of it. Also one west off Main. You should not have any problem.

I went there in my car a few weeks ago - do not try it on a saturday or Sunday - too much traffic - I was lucky to find a place to park in my car - this is downtown Kansas City - right off of 70 HWY - There is the farmers market right behind the musuem - the musuem parking lot is not for a rv - Cableas is to the west of their in Kansas not far off of 70 with lots of parking but not a short drive - We enjoyed the musuem and there is a lot of great produce stores right there also

Don't miss it, plan on 2-4 hours. Best bet is to locate some campground and drive to Arabia.
