They are required in our book. Doesn't happen every night though. No morning fires here. Whatever way works to light it up, we use. How much? That depends. How big is the fire ring? Alone or with the group. We've used as little as 6 pieces and as much as a 6' wide x 2' high stack in one night. If the fire is made and maintained properly, the smoke is not so bad. A poor fire will drive you away.

Gotta have a campfire. Won't stay at a CG unless they allow them. In many parts of MI you can't bring in your own wood because of the fear of Ash Borer spread, so you have to get your wood from the CG.... that is the only bad point. Mostly only at night as I cook on an LP campstove for most dinners.

I like having a campfire more than DH so he brings enough wood from home or takes a chainsaw to cut up fallen logs. We will usually have one or two both in the morning or at night when it's cool but still light out. We sometimes use it for marshmellows or making an entire meal, just depends and sometimes just the fire and we drink a beer or two till it dies down. If we can't have a fire, I'm a little disappointed but it's not a major part of our trip.

In Northern CA it depends on if the campground even allows them. Some do not even allow free standing fire bowls.

We do have a fire bowl with a screen and use it if it is cool outside. We do not cook over the fire, we use it mainly to set the mood.

It's mandatory in my book. Have one in the morning and at night and do most of the cooking over them. If the CG has the grates on the fire ring all the better but always haul a big cinder block to set in the fire for putting the castiron fry pan on if they don't. Haul all my own firewood too, two rows across the back of the truck piled to the top takes care of needs for a Fri.thru Sunday camp and if there is any left we give it to somebody who's staying the week. I will also bring the old Coleman stove too in case of rain. I can get around the wood ban(Emerald Ash Borer) by bring only dried debarked Elm from the home place but than again it seems most of the places we go are in the ban limits.
Funning thing thou, the DW and I were talking about the smell this weekend and I told her I could tell what the smell from Birch(best smelling), Oak, Pine, Maple or trash wood, been building fires since I was about 10 years old(Boy Scouts, Enviromental Learning Center and now a scout leader once again).
It ain't camping if you don't smell like smoke.

Usually don't have a fire unless you call some citronella candles on the table a very small fire. I'm not against fires just enjoy the night sky looking at the stars and sometimes northern lights at seasonal site.

We don't have one.

On our recent trip to Olympic NP I realized I don't even like the smell anymore.

I will sometimes dismantle and bury old campfire rings at remote boondocking sites.

We winter in South Florida, and for the like of me I can't understand why people want to cozy up to a blazing fire on a 80 degree night!

WOW, I sure can't understand that either! That's the last thing that'd be on my mind at 80 degrees in a dry heat; let alone with a wet blanket over my head.
