I am looking to buy a new Shur flo water pump. My old one is much too noisy. The whisper king model offered at Camping World looks to meet my needs. However, I'm wondering about accumulator tanks. Is it a necessary item with this pump or is it just nice to have?

Nice to have. Won't have to pump as often running that is.

FWIW: I installed a "Whisper King" a couple of years ago and found although a bit more quiet, it cycled more often and it didn't seem to pump the same GPH as the previous pump I was replacing due to failure. IMHO: If I were intalling a "Whisker King" pump, I'd also install an accumulator tank as well.

Further info to my post, in 2005, I was having some installation work done at the CW store in Rocklin, Ca. One of the items was a new pump. After it was installed, the pump wouldn't pump anything more than a trickle out the faucet. The installer said I needed an accumulator tank which he didn't have in stock. So, I told him to take out the newly purchased pump and put the old one back in. I've been living with an ever increasing noisy pump since then. Was this guy just mis-informed? Why wouldn't that new Shur-Flo pump work?
On edit, I am reading the posting above this one re the tank. Hmmm.

I put in a ShurFlo Smart Sensor and have been extremely pleased with it. The pump runs at variable speed depending on demand, and starts and stops soft, so the noise is way down. No pulsing when just using a trickle, but plenty of flow for big jobs. It was a bit larger than the old cheapy pump, but essentially a 15 minute swap out. I'd highly recommend you consider this one.

the reviews on the CW site are mixed for the particular unit you recommend. Understanding you're having good luck with it, I'm wondering if you also have an accumulator tank in that big coach you drive.

I put a Shur flo accumulator tank in this past spring and had to re plumb the pump to get it to fit in the space I had. I see very little difference and I wouldn’t do it again because I really see no benefit as of now.

I just bought a accumulator tank but haven't installed it yet. I'm confident it will "smooth" the water flow coming out of the fixtures by providing consistent water pressure. They have an internal bladder and they claim, and it seems to me as well, that this will reduce "hammering". If none of this is true I'm only out $50 and a few minutes of my time installing it.
FYI in my research I found that they are not recommeded with some pumps and you need to make sure you get the tank with a precharge that matches your pump pressure. I've heard the variable pumps work well without a tank but are rather pricey imo.

It's a handy-dandy thing to have. Great burst of pressure at the kitchen faucet or shower head. Shut the tap off, wait for the pump to catchup and enjoy the pressure in a few minutes time. Less short-cycling of the pump and no nighttime rumbles when using the facilities in the "quiet hours."

Cheers,

I installed the small ShurFlo accumulator tank in my old Class C and was reasonably happy with the performance. The pump ran less often, and there was no fast cycling at lower flow levels. When we bought the Class A, I installed a 2 gallon accumulator tank from Lowes and I like this setup even better. The pump runs much less frequently, although it does take a bit of getting used to the longer run times when it does kick in. When I installed this one, I included a shutoff valve so no anti-freeze would go into the tank when winterizing after the pipes were drained.
