Signature shows the '01 Suburban 1500, w/ 5.3L and 3.73 rear end, towing the '08 JayFlight at 28 feet. Mileage varies from 8-point-something to 10-point-something, maybe with an 11 mpg tossed in for bragging rights. I agree that the hills, wind, and travel speeds all have their effects, but I also think the quality of fuel impacts this just as much. I see a definite improvement with the better-known name brands, than with the off-brand fuels we are sometimes forced to deal with. (Was that water I smelled in the gas hose?)

Schwartzworld asked about 4 wheel drive vs 2 wheel -- I have 4 wheel because we boondock in muddy or sandy areas of the national forests. My guess is that someone who stays on pavement could do ok with 2 wheel drive.

think he ment with the added weight of a 4x4. here in northern illinois it's just a whole lot easier in the winter. front wheel drv isn't bad but i had vans b4 and are just as bad as pickups(2W) in the snow. several times last winter the only ones out and about were the 4 wheelers. does make it tough to call into work after a good snowfall if the boss knows what you drive though

We averaged 8.5 on our last trip. Had a 40mph side and headwind all the way in from Kingman, Az. the last day. Got 4.5mpg on that tank ! That kind of brought our average down a bit. Any engineer will tell you that it takes "X" amount of fuel to move "X" amount weight "X" distance. Any large variation is in your right foot and the things one cannot control. ....RVH

so far, we got about 10-14 when towing. We just came back from Yellowstone NP(one way through Zion, the other way through Bryce Canyon). Trip total 2689 miles, 199 gallons of gas. Average 12.74mpg with my 2008 Toyota Tundra 4.7 V8, pulling a 6x10 cargo conversion camper.

Well since you have a Toyota you may be interested in these numbers....I have a new Toyota Sequioa 4X4 with 5.7 V8 4:30 rear diff and 6 speed tranny. Towing a Tango 309BHSS at 7700 pounds loaded and I'm getting exactly 8.5 mpg at 60 mph. Without tow, this SUV gets 17 mpg. Not what I expected, but hey when the new desiel Tundra comes out...I'm there.
