OK, don't laugh. This is a silly question....

I realized today that if I flip the release handle on my hitch I can then close my sliding bed cover without removing the hitch. I was just wondering, is there any reason I would not want to do this? Any harm to the hitch? Here is a photo of what I did.

Mine came the way your picture shows. I thought that was the correct way.

probably came that way for shipping size. Makes it harder to reach when it's down vs. up.

The downside is having to reach over the bed rails to pull the lever and not having the handle end at shoulder heigth for a straight line pull. When I had a PU with a bed cover, rather than flipping the handle, I was able to drill a different hole and rotate the handle just enough to clear the cover when unhitched yet just above the bed rail when the hitch was in use.

At over 6' I would not be able to reach mine this way. Can you still pull it out all the way before it hits your wheel well? I just use a short bungee cord from the locking hole to the rail. I see no reason it could harm anything. I have seen lots of guys do it this way.

I always wondered if that would work. I've been wanting to add a retractable bed cover.

I tried flipping the handle on my Reese Signature Series 18K and found that getting it to release when the trailer was connected was a real PITA. I turned it back over because it's easier to just tilt the head forward to close the bed cover than fight the hitch release.

That could be a pic of my old Dodge Ram, same hitch, same bed cover, same lever position. Used it that way for years with no problem.

I flipped mine for the exact same reason, otherwise my roll-n-lock cover would hit it. It has worked great.
