We tow a 2007 Honda CRV behind our A class motorhome. We love the car but the tires wear out way too fast. Car has about 36,000 miles and the second set of tires are worn out. It has been towed about 17,000 miles. They are Goodyear tires.
Anyone else have this problem?? Are we buying the wrong tires?
We have just found out that we had a tire problem on our toad. There were some threads on this forum about "cupping", which was the problem we were having. There were 2 suggestions as to what may have caused it. One was needing an alignment and the other was if your toad is not being towed completely level. Ours is a tiny big higher than the motorhome and we are now wondering if that caused our problems. You might check that out.
You have 53,000 miles and worn out the factory tires and one additional set? That is about normal. If you are on the third set worn out, then this is about 19,000 miles on average, and that would indicate a problem, such as bad alignment, or underinflation on the tires.
While being towed, if you look at the car, it will tend to swing a little from left to right - adding to the tire wear.
I would not worry if you are just wearing out the second set at 53,000 miles. It is not the 35,000 miles that might be expected without towing, but not to much to worry about.
When shopping for replacement tires, look at the Treadwear, Heat Rating, and traction rating. They must all exceed a treadwear of C to be sold in the United States. The B rating is lightly longer tire life, at the disadvantage of lower traction, because the tire is built with less sticky tire materials. Tires with a A treadwear is built with the least sticky rubber, so it lasts a longer time.
The heat ratings are normally found at C or B, unless it is a very high speed rated tire, that might have a A heat rating, so it will stick together at 155 MPH.
I bought Big O tires for my Honda CRV, because it had the best looking traction tire, it was a all weather tire, and Big O will replace a tire that wears out pre-maturely. I had 4 wheel drive, and wanted to be able to drive in the sand while out camping, and frequently did that.
I don't know about the CRV, but my Jeep Grand Cherokee has 180,000 miles on the odo, plus about 60,000 tow miles and we just put on our 5th set of tires. That works out to about 60,000 miles per set. Since the CRV is a lot lighter car, I would think you should get at least that from a set. I would never consider 19,500 miles to be about right as stated by another post. Maybe 40 years ago with bias ply tires, but not with new, radial tires.
I drive an 07 CRV AWD as my daily driver. I do not tow it. The CRV in 07 came from the factory with relatively fast wearing tires. The Bridgestones were particulary weak. I wore out the first set at 20000 miles (Continentials). I replaced them with Goodyear Triple-Treds from Sam' Club. I have 20000 miles on these new tires and they are not close to being 1/2 wornout. However, my experience has been that tires with a long treadlife ride a little harder than tires with shorter tread life and these Goodyears are no exception.
Two major problem with early tire wear on toads are an un-level tow bar and not rotating the tires every 5,000 miles. That is a combination of driving AND towing miles.
An un-level tow bar puts to much strain in the front end of the toad causing premature tire wear.
Many people do not rotate tires after 5,000 towing miles thinking there is no wear while being towed. Not true, lots of front tire wear while being towed. I saw that on my brand new toad with the rubber tits still on the tires when we left home. The new rubber tits on the front tires were gone after 5,000 miles of towing the rear tires still had them.

Have any of you with excessive wear had an alignment done? Since my first set wore and I had an alignment done, second set has about 20K driven and 20K towed, no signs of abnormal wear --- Switched to Michelin's, the Bridgestones were too noisy.
