I have a Encore class c 1985 model with an Onan gen set. It will start and run as long as I hold down the start button, when I release the start button it dies...Whats the deal
Oil pressure switch, oil level, voltage regulator, could be lots of things. The starter switch bypasses all the safeties that are built into the genset. If one of them is acting up, or there is a legitimate fault (low oil for instance) then the genset will not remain running, in an effort to not damage the genset.

I tried to post on this last night but the site quit working or something. Anyway,..
I had on old 94 Southwind with a Onan 5000 The start switch mounted on the genset used to stick in the off position if I shut it down using that switch. Then when I tried to start it from the dash switch, it would start, and then shut down when I released the switch. I had to go back, bump the start switch on the genset mounted switch, then go back and it would work from the dash switch. At any rate, it was a bad genset start switch. I finaly replaced it and had no more problems that way. I also had a bad fuel pump, that acted similar. It pumped a little, but not enough to keep it going. Replaced the pump, and all was fine.

More helpful to know the Model of the ONAN than the model of the coach it's in. If your Onan is a BFA, I have a manual and think I already scanned the troubleshooting page. If it's a BFA, it starts off the house battery and ignition power comes from that battery. When you release the Start switch, it's supposed to run on 12VDC that IT produces. You can see from this that there are several things that could be wrong. There's also a low oil switch, bypassed on start, that will stop it if not satisfied once you release the Start side of the switch. There is also a Spec Code. My book covers BF a-b, BFA a-c, BGA a-c, and NH j-p. If yours is any of those, send me a PM with your email id and I'll send you a scan of the troubleshooting chart.

i had a BF series and my problem was the R1-Battery charge resistor. it is located inside the fin cover on the right side of the genny. its a brown ceramic tube about 3 inches long. now if the BG and BF are very diffent this may not apply but if it does its a very easy fix under ten bucks.

I would check the oil level or level sensor. Gives the same symptom of having to hold the start switch.
