Okay, I am looking to buy an older Ford Ranger pickup to pull 4 down behind my motorhome. I can't seem to find information on which of these can be towed 4 down. Some of the Rangers I have looked at don't have the owners manual anymore.

Can any standard transmission older PU like this be towed 4 down? I have seen a list of newer cars and trucks that can and can't be towed 4 down, but I have not found a list for older (mid 90's) cars and trucks.

Any help pointing me in the right direction would be appreciated.

thanks,
Phillip

I towed a 1996 Mazda B3000 pickup 15,000 miles. It had a manual transmission. Had no problems. The Mazda B Series and the Ford Rangers are the same except for trim. Good luck.

I would suggest that you take a look at the Remco site and look at the model year that you plan on towing.

Depends on how old the older Ranger, as they go back to the '80s, using a number of different manual transmissions.

My '92 was officially not towable, but it was actually towable because of the particular manual transmission that was installed. My '01 is officially towable, because Ford by then had stopped using the not-towable manual transmission, so there was no doubt which one was installed.

Basically, the Mazda-derived M5OD transmission is towable if you follow the guidelines, 200 miles under 55 mph. The Mitsubishi-derived M5OD transmission is not approved, by either Ford or Mitsubishi, for recreational towing.

Earlier 3-speeds and 4-speed overdrives, I have no information.

Automatic transmissions, none towable since the Ranger was introduced, unless the transfer case in a 4x4 has a neutral that makes the truck towable.
