I use a one touch ultra myself but am switching to a Breeze2 if the insurance will pick up the strips. Rite Aid periodically runs a sale on these meters and they are basically free after rebate.
I used to regularly test from my leg, but my circulation is down and now I pretty much have to go with finger tip. possibly palm.
I don't use any of the "fancy" functions on my ultra but do keep a running chart of BP, weight, glucose and give my Drs. the last 30 days worth when I have a visit.

If you are a veteran, check with the VA, they sent me to class and gave me a Accu-chek Aviva meter free and lifetime supply of strips

I am type 2 for many years. I use the breeze II by Beyer. Its a great tester. It has ten test strips loaded, most other tester use individual test strips. By all means learn as much as you can about diabetes. You can lead a normal life if you take care.

Which meter? Whichever one has the cheapest strips for you (i.e. if the strips are covered with your insurance)

My kid has had T1 for the last 8 years, we've used lots of different meters. By FAR our favorite is the Freestyle Lite. (Clicky)

We even gave up the One Touch that radioed the BG directly into his pump. Like the freestyle better. It's tiny, uses a tiny amount of blood. We almost always use the forearm (not for pain - he's a kid so his hands are typically dirty). Best feature? The little led lite for nighttime checks (not so important for a T2 person)

If you have eyesight problems, get a meter that has a big display. (Like a freestyle freedom, many others are made)

yep, it dawned on me that this was the most crucial element in this. for Aetna the one touch ultra are the only one that is category 2, the rest cost twice as much.

I got the free breeze 2 meter with one disk. Dr. is supposed to be faxing the Rx for more strips today and from what I gathered from talking to medicare, they will pay for them. if it is thru Aetna the one touch are $50 for 90 days and the breeze would be $100 for 90 days, so the "convenience' isn't worth it to me. for a while I used the similar ones that had 11 or so tests in a drum.
but when traveling the meter would come open and I could waste an entire drum full of tests.

The diabetic supply service I had been using was recently bought out by another company. They switched me to the Freestyle Lite meter. I had no problem with the old meter, an earlier Freestyle model, but I really like this new one.
Bottom line, I think they are all OK, so whatever you choose should be fine.

Oh, the only meter I would consider is the type that draws the blood up by capillary action. I had one once where you smeared a drop on a pad, that sucked.

That would be very rare these days. All meters we've used are capillary.

We've never used one of the Bayer drum types because type 1 == test at least 10 times a day - yup, we burn thru strips fast. But I can see how that would be very convenient for a T2 person that doesn't need to test as often.
