I am looking to buy a new truck and have been looking at the big three diesels. My concern with Ford is the issues they have been having with the 6.0. I've even looked for the 7.3 older truck but most have too many miles. So I am considering the 6.4 but wanted to know what others out there thinks of Fords change.
Did the 6.4 fix all the issues they were having with blown head gaskets and such?

The 6.4 has been a better engine. From what I have heard and read the biggest problems were caused by people chipping the engine for more power then the head bolts would stretch and blow the head gaskets.

It might be to late in the model year to buy a new 6.4L Ford, unless this is left over on the dealer lot. I believe the 2010's are being shipped now and these may have the brand new 6.7L engine in them. This is not the Cummins engine in them. This is a new engine that Ford has design from the ground up. I believe this new engine is required to meet the 2010 emissions rules by the EPA. You will need to check with the dealer to see if this is true. I know that I have been reading about this engine in the diesel magazines on the newstands.

Don't fall for the hysterical rantings of people who never owned or drove a Ford Power Stroke! Just the actual truth and facts from actual owners!

Out of 246,000 2003 Powerstroke Diesels made, Ford bought back from owners 500 early production models. 500 is 0.2% of the Ford PSDs made that year, and as a good will gesture by Ford, were replaced or bought by Ford for the full purchase price. And many of these early failures occured in "performance enhanced" (chipped) engines, or improperly maintained!
35% of the owners who's trucks were offered to be bought back, again bought new Ford SuperDuty Diesels...after all if you want the #1 selling truck for the last 31 years...you're not going to settle for less!
To put it in broader terms, since the newer generation PSD was introduced in 2003, and updated twice, Ford has sold 1.3 million new Powerstroke diesels! And the brand new powerful, more fuel efficient (non-Navistar!)100% built and designed Ford 6.7 Scorpion PSD will again keep Ford #1 in Diesel trucks sold.
And other than a few early production 6.0 engines produced in the first part of 2003, Ford Diesels are comparable with DuraMax and Cummins frequency of repair and reliability records, with 98% of all Ford's powerstroke engines made still being driven on the road. (Per actual DMV records on operational registered vehicles)
I never bash other brands. Heck, there are current NHTSA formal complaints and class action active lawsuits against the 2007 to 2009 6.7 Cummins diesels, too! And the 2001 thru 2004 DuraMax LB7 "had experienced a problems with head gaskets or injector cup seal leaks in past years". (The Diesel Page.com)
As an owner of trouble free 2003 and 2004 PSD Ford SuperDutys...I don't assume that all the past and present Cummins and DuraMax Izusu engines are failure prone based on these reports!
But then "the real proof in the pudding"...Ford sells around 250,000 Super Duty PSD diesels a year vs GM DuraMax and Dodges Cummins diesel total sales combined 230,000 engines! (Ford.com) More people who buy Ford trucks tow with them than any other brand. Higher percentages of Fords are purchased with diesels than other brands. More fleets buy Ford Diesels, Fire Departments, Ambulance Companies, Class C Motorhomes, Delivery trucks
