Just bought a 1988 Northstar pop up TC and have to go get it. I hope to have pictures soon but the guy said the tie downs clamped to the top box rail. They are not the stake pocket type.
Anyone familiar with these? Any idea whether they will work on a new style box?
Thanks.......DJ

Got a link to the auction? I might be able to scare up a mounting view if there's some in the old auction link.

New truck's boxes are way too weak to have campers secured to them. You need something stronger.
The Happy Jacks with the stabilizing bar may not even be strong enough for a '88 camper. It might weigh too much.
Torklift that connect to the frame would be much safer. More money but safer.
Sounds like the ones you are looking at ar "Brophy". I think they will cause damage to your pick up bed. Second item at this website.

Yep. I bet those are exactly what they are from his description. Thank you. Guess I better figure something else out!!!

When I bought my first camper in '91 (a used 1976 10 foot Dreamer) it came with four tie-downs that clamped to the bed rails, and some good sized turnbuckles like those you can buy at a farm supply (no springs). I used them for the first several trips to hold the camper to my shiny new '91 Ford. They worked, but slightly bent the bed rails in the front. Also had one of the turnbuckles fall off on a bumpy dirt road and had to go back and find it. I learned from experience and installed HappiJac tie-downs with spring-loaded turnbuckles, which were the cat's meow of the time.
I don't know whether the new Fords have strong enough sheet metal, but you could probably get the camper home running on pavement with the bed rail tie-downs. I would not plan on using them for the long haul, though. Best to go with something better. And you might as well install the something better now to avoid possible damage to that shiny new 2010 sheet metal.

I had stake bed tie downs with turnbuckles on my '74 Chev with a '76 Beaver 9 1/2 on it for over 75,000 miles with no problems. The beds back then were strong, today's beds are not and I would not use them. In a pinch get some heavy duty nylon 4" wide ratchet straps and wrap them around the frame to your tie downs, drive cautiously.

I still have a set of Brophy clamp-on style bedrail tie downs from my old camper. I used them on my '82 Chevy with 11' Vacationeer and '92 Ford with 8' Six Pac before I built my own tie-downs without any problems with bed damage on either truck. I used the Ford alot off-road too.
Your truck will be fine with that style tie-down with the light weight camper. Just make sure you use the rubber cushioned camper turnbuckles like from HappiJac and keep them snug but not too tight, rather than just regular hardware store solid turnbuckles and chains.

http://www.tweetys.com/tie-downs-turnbuckles.aspx Take a look at these. I used universal Belly Bars years ago and they were fine, even ran on the beach with them. Got mine from Sears years ago, I think they were about $125.00 but everything goes up. Good luck
