I have a 2005 F450 6.0 V-8 diesel. On warm mornings starts right up and purrs like a kitten. On cool mornings (45-55) starts up clunking and chugging. On colder mornings (35-45) clunks then stalls. Takes numerous tries to get started and then clunks and chugs like an old truck till it warms up. Has 76,000 miles on it with 25,000 of it towing a 38' 5th wheel.
Recently had an oil change and replaced fuel filters.
No problem originally but last year started hard and this year has gotten worse.

Any ideas of what to look at would be appreciated.

My 7.3 has always been cranky in the cold. Use your block heater.

GM's have glowplugs, and grid heaters. I don't know if Ford has both, but my gues is the glowplugs are not working right.

I agree use the block heater and is Ford still using glowplugs or a grid heater?

Sounds like the glowplugs aren't working right, or at all.

I used a 5W40W Synthetic in my 6.0 and it really helped the Romps in the winter months.

Thanks for all the great info. Since we didn't have this problem in the first 3 years, I'm thinking it is probably the glowplugs and a trip to the dealer is in order.

The Block Heater is something I'm not familiar with although I see on my Ford sticker I was charged $35 for one. But we are fulltimers and try to stay in warm climates during the winter. We are in Las Vegas now where 30's are consdered very cold.

Seems diesels are more cranky in the cold, so plug her in. There should be a plug hanging at the front bumper.
