On our nearly new fifth wheeler I prefer to travel with less than 1/8th
of a tankful of water. Just enough to flush and wash when traveling.

Our problem....the pump will not prime and pump water unless the tank is almost half full.

Has anyone run into a similar situation? If so, how did you resolve this problem.

Is the water pump positioned above the freshwater tank?

Where is the fresh water 'inlet' hole on your tank?

Most are positioned as low as possible on the tank. When the water in the tank is below the inlet opening it can not be pumped. The water has to be above the inlet hole for the pump to work. I have a very long and narrow tank so the water left below the inlet hole is substantial. Really not a problem just keep the water filled above the inlet opening.

Duh... Most are setup this way. The pumps are self-priming.

Mine is off to the side of the tank, but that shouldn't matter. The other poster had it right about the inlet position. Maybe it was installed too high, or there was a length of tube that used to be conencted on the inside which went to the bottom. I like the way our trailer pulls 1/3 to half full on fresh water.

"Most"? Not.

Check the intake hose on the pump. Mine had a kink in it that would not allow water to flow easily. I had to "replumb" by disconnecting the hose, cutting off the unneeded part and reconnecting. Naturally, it was in a place that is not easily accessed. It now works fine. At first I had the same symptoms as you.

"Duh"?? LOL

"Most are setup this way"... Which way? On my TT, the water pump is next to the tank on the floor. All my friend TTs that I've seen also have the pump down on the floor next to the tank. So if you are saying most are setup with the pump higher than the tank, I haven't seen one. I just figured some are probably setup that way, and the pump may have problems getting started.

My pump is at the front of the 5th wheel on the top side of the floor. My fresh water tank is at the rear of the 5th wheel below the floor. Therefore, my pump is above my tank. One thing I have noticed that I need to do in order for the pump to prime in most cases is to have a faucet open when the pump is first started. This allows the air to escape that the incoming water is attempting to compress. Give that a try and see if it helps.

OP: What are you using to determine the fill level of the tank?
