AND the vent lids that 'have covers' where flapping so hard they almost came off 'under the maxairs'.

That's one of the main reasons to always travel with the vents closed - even when they're under MaxxAirs. Keeping them closed also helps keep dust out of the rig when going down the road.

My vents tend to open up on their own when I'm under way. No amount of tightening, short of stripping the mechanism will keep them closed. Sometimes they do stay closed so it must depend on wind direction/strength. So far they haven't been damaged. I suppose vent covers would help...

You ever wonder if there really IS someone watching over RV'ers?

Same thing with me it got so bad and that stretch of interstate has nothing for miles not even gas stations at the exits. THEN a KOA sign shows up out of nowhere, nothing else on the exit but the KOA! Right when I was sure something bad was going to happen to me and MH.

I pulled off it said it was 10 miles but at least it wasn't on the highway. It then started pouring sideways as I'm traveling down a 2 lane with no where to turn around. I decided to call the KOA and.....the number was disconnected!

Panic had already set in about 20 miles back not I was mad now. I kept driving and I figured if they did close their doors, unless a bull dozer came thru right after the bank foreclosed on the CG, the damn sites would still be there and I wanted off the road and dang nab it I was going to park there closed or not.

I find it open for business, buried in the cornfield, nicest people I've met so far and the longest most level pull thru site I have ever seen in 2 years of the road.

Yup I'm sure there is a RV God.

Interesting! Freeman is about 5 miles from where my mother was born (in 1916) in a farm house and I went for the first time last year. I stayed in Menno which is just southwest of Freeman.

It also has a nice city park with hookups along one side of the parking lot. They take care of travelers

Maybe you should try securing the vents' knob or lever with a piece of wire so that it can't turn from travel vibrations. Our front vent sometimes won't stay open on bumpy desert roads, so I'm thinking about drilling a small hole in it's plastic opening knob, and then running some bailing wire through the hole to keep the knob from turning. This technique should also keep vents closed when under way.

(We intentionally have just the front roof vent open on dirt/dusty roads, with it's fan turned to "AIR IN" so as to maintain pressure on the inside of the RV - so dust from the tires can't work it's way inside.)

I left Twin Cities in MN three days ago and soon as I was out of the Metro headed West the winds started....(I usually take I 35 south but wanted to try the two lane highways)

Yesterday afternoon almost to Yankton SD my arms were hurting and worn out....mile after mile of corn fields and gusting winds from every direction...(Yes, why no warnings put out !)

By some miracle I saw a small town and sign (Freeman) and I pulled off...then saw a "City Park" sign and drove another 2 blocks and saw a sign that said "Campground".

I am in heaven this morning....a small very nice campground (6 sites with level concrete pads for only $6.00) .....my dog, Uri woke me up at 6 am so he could go out.....

The wind has died down and after another cup of coffee I am getting back on highway #81 and heading south all the way down to Texas.
Cool story bro!

Texas is fantastic this time of year!

And I'm glad to see you're posting again. You haven't posted in the snowbird forum for a long time, and I was wondering what happened to you and/or rig.

Just this week I was mapping out a completely new route back to MN. I was thinking about taking the coast line up and staying at that one park you talked about with the shrimp boats. I think it was in Palacios????

Whew! I just barely got off the road in one piece today. Headed out for Florida down 39 out of Wisconsin and the winds where just whipping from all directions. Usually on that road you get head winds but this was just coming from all directions 40 to 60 mph slamming the MH around and throwing my toad left and right.

The dogs all started barking and screaming. I had to stop to see what that was all about. Well the ladder got ripped partly off and was banging on the MH, and ya I had a lot of stuff strapped to it. AND the vent lids that 'have covers' where flapping so hard they almost came off 'under the maxairs'. NEVER been in wind that strong enough to beat the lids crazy like that, and that was while I was parked!

I tell ya while I was trying to find a way to get off all I kept thinking about was that I hoped I didn't see a TV and TT on this road flipped over they would have been toast.

Of course no weather report warning of this. But the radar of the storm front that went across the state showed the most distinct bow echo that high winds warnings 'should' have gone out.

Camped out in a CG in the middle of a corn field, we will regroup and head out again in the morning to see if we can get this show on the road again to warmer weather.

This just reminds me that I'm glad my vent covers are anchored down into the roof instead of the flexible sides of the vent, keeping them lower (Water can still get out, but little wind can go under) to the roof and preventing wind from getting up underneath.
