Does anybody tow a 70's or 80's Volkswagen Bus (vanagon)
Any issues?
Any problem getting base plates?
Or are they too ugly to tow?

We have friends who tow a restored 1971 VW Bus manual transmission. No problems.

Too ugly-- no. So ugly they are cute-- YES!

Here is a REALLY ugly VW bus. CLICKY

I have towed bugs. Older style trans. I believe in adding a street ell to the trans fill hole so you can squeeze another punt or so of trans fluid in.

I saw a beautiful older VW bus with a matching paint job being towed by a MH while in Conn in Sept. I should have snapped a picture...it did have what appeared to be some type of custom built tow bar...nothing that Id ever seen before.

The Vanagon (Type 2 T3) was made between 1979 thru 1992
The older Westfalia style they started building in the 1950 and continued til the late 1970s.

My choice would be the older Type 2 because I think the engines were easier to work on and they are lighter. But, depending on age, they can bring big bucks. Look on The Samba. You will find all kinds of them - all styles.

Yeah, but they got a one-piece windshield in about 1963 (at least the European maket ones). I think you'd have to ask some expert VW folks whether the transmission can take being churned by the wheels moving when the engine isn't running. I'm pretty sure an automatic wouldn't like it, but a stickshift might be OK.

It was fairly typical in European vehicles of that era for the transmission lubrication to be driven by the input shaft (bitter experience towing a '68 Ford Cortina stickshift four down).

Frank,

No, one piece windshield on the bus came in in 1968.

BTW, started camping in 1958 VW panel truck (36HP).

I thought the one we rented in the UK in '65 had a one-piece windshield. I'll have to dig out the old movie film and look again!
