We are going to be passing through the Galveston / Port Arthur area in the early Spring. We thought we might try and stay a day or two in the Galveston or Port Arthur area, if there are any nice beaches. I know a lot of them were messed up by hurricane Ike, and that's why I'm asking . . . .

Should all be good now. It's been a few years and they cleaned Galveston up.

We like Dellanera RV park at the east end of the seawall in Galveston owned and operated by Galveston Parks Board and easily accessible to all things Galveston. The beaches are fair and will be pretty much the same within the area you specify. Expect a little trash and some seaweed. Its just a fact of life down there. You didn't give much info, so not sure exactly what your looking for. RV park, boondock?

The park listed by 2112 is nice also. It is county owned and operated. The only drawback is it is in a very industrialized area. Not much around but the beach. Gulf view to the south and refinery view to the north. I still like it though It is about 25 - 30 miles down the coast from Galveston so trips back to Galveston for whatever are longer, plus there is a toll bridge that is $3 each direction.

IMHO there are NO nice beaches in Texas. Not what I call nice anyway. The water is nasty brown & the sands are not nice & white. Now the Destin Florida area...that is NICE beaches! Enjoy the trip, anywhere there is water can't be all bad.

I would HIGHLY recommend the brand new Sandpiper RV Resort that is right in front of Stewart Beach on Galveston Island. I stayed there two weeks ago and while it's still under construction it is almost complete and will be fully operational in less than two months.

The beaches aren't like Florida because the way the Mississippi River dumps into the gulf. We get alot of sand and sedement. The farther west you go the better. The cleanest beaches Texas has to offer are on South Padre Island which is down in the valley close to Mexico.

Last month my wife and I stayed at Matagorda Bay Nature Park which is where the Colorado River dumps into the Gulf of Mexico. The park was situated along the man made canal that feeds up to the intercoastal and a couple hundred yards from the beach. I was surprised at how nice the beach so we plan to return in warmer weather so we can enjoy it. Its a little farther south from Galveston so that might not work for you. From Galveston Island its probably close to two hours towing an RV.

As 2112 mentioned, I like Quintana. Local secret. No crowds. Fun watchng the tankers coming in.
