I recently had my 08 Jeep Wrangler Toad in for a recall notice. I engaged a conversation with a Jeep Corporation Rep in the Service area as he saw the Baseplate on the front and asked me what I do to prep to Tow it?? Its a 6 speed manual so its able to be towed 4 down, no lock on steering so no need to disconnect any Battery power as the keys dont have to be in it....
I told him I Shift the transfer case to Neutral and also manual transmission to neutral and thats it, as the manual says,
I was in Awe when he said I should ALWAYS have the Trans in first gear while towing........
That was a new one on me, he showed me online the Service Bulletin that Jeep put out in regards to this....
Guess I will tow it in 1st Gear from now on...lol

With the transmission in neutral there is nothing to prevent the gears from spinning up and they may not get lube. With the transfer case in neutral, and the transmission in first the gears are prevented from moving.
I was told the same thing for my Blazer.
Even though I have a driveshaft disconnect, I tow my Blazer in park in Park (auto trans) for the same reason. There is enough friction to spin internal gears when in neutral.
I always put my Rubicon in gear to tow it, transfer case in Neutral.
That's what the Owners Manual says to do.
I use 6th gear, just in case the unthinkable (and unlikely) should happen, and the transfer case should somehow get in gear (or I don't get it fully in Neutral).
I would rather have the engine spinning along in high gear at 65 MPH than in low gear at 65 MPH!
I don't think the engine would last long at that RPM!

I do the same thing - use 6th gear instead of 1st when flat towing. Just as Mowermech says, just in case the unlikely scenario occurs and the transfer case comes out of Neutral.
I've discussed it with a Jeep mechanic that I trust, and he couldn't think of any reason it should be 1st gear specifcially, and that any gear would prevent the tranny from spinning just the same.
I asked him about the newer JK Wranglers as well when my sister was looking for a Jeep toad, and he said the same thing applied to the newer manual trans. Then again, she changed her mind to an automatic at the last minute, so she tows it in Park.

OK I'll bite.......WHY?
Why What?
I think Old-Biscuit was asking why they would recommend towing with the trans in 1st gear.
I never asked why,
Its what they recommend in a service bulletin he showed me online that he says was an update to the owners manual that year, he's a Jeep Service Rep out of Dearborn Michigan and thats good enough for me....

I always ask WHY when shown something. Must be my upbringing......always was asking WHY, WHY, WHY. I like knowing the reasons behind something
Always towed my old Bronco in neutral and didn't run into a problem (that I knew of).
Thanks to those that supplied the WHY!!
