Hi there, I just upgraded (not sure)from a class A to a 5th wheel.
What is a good hitch to buy, the trailer is light 9700 lbs the truck is a 2010 ford 1/2 ton 4x4. I'm not planning to do a lot of travelling as we lease a lot on an annual basis but the odd weekend we will go somewhere. Help, a green 5er.

I would recommend a hitch with a four way pivot action. Makes hooking and unhooking much easier.

As far as brand goes I would choose the one that fits your pocket book. None are superior over the others for trailers that size.

If your truck is a shortbed then you will want a auto or manual sliding hitch.

I think 15k is the smallest size which would work fine.

I don't think any of the 1/2ton Fords are rated to pull 9700lbs. But, to answer your question, and if you have a short bed, you will need some type of slider hitch, either manual or automatic. SuperGlide makes a really nice auto slider that's rated to 12K lbs. I think Curt also make one that's less expensive.

If you don't need a slider I would definitely recommend the B&W Patriot hitch. You can check them out at the www.turnoverball.com or www.tweetys.com/. I would stay away from the low end bar type kingpin latch (Reese Pro 15K) and go with the jaw clamping latch.

X-2 I just installed mine and couldn't be more pleased. The quality is
excellent. The shipping packaging is a work of art in itself. The powder coating is perfect and assembly is a snap as all parts fit perfectly.
And, the price, just $399.00 with free shipping. See link below.Patriot Hitch

1/2 tons and decent sized 5'ers dont usually mix too well. That being said, take a look at the "Hi-Jacker" hitches. They have a damn near 'fool proof' system. I have a short box, towed for 6+ years, and have never gotten myself into a jam where I would even consider using my slider hitch option. However, it is peace of mind.
