Hi Les
We just drove from Kino Bay to Peurto Penasco using part of an old highway (we thought it was a continuation of Calle 36 but the map we have calls it 29) that leads to Pt. Libertad, lots of pot holes, narrow without a shoulder but certainly do able we had a group of 10 rigs all the way from 42' class A to 29' class C's. Once approaching Pt. Libertad you turn right on to a wonderful new road that heads north the road is not complete and requires about 1.5 mile dirt road detour that again as long as there hasn't been a lot rain shouldn't be a problem from there good signage directs you to Pt. Penasco, highway 37 is like the road to Pt. Libertad only not as many potholes, along the new road there are 6 huge pullouts many that have a view of the sea of Cortez, where you can have lunch.
Best wishes
Michael

Should be traveled in less than a day. We have completed the old route in a single day and it is further to travel. AND at that time the old route was under construction on Hwy 2 with numerous potholes.

If you are coming from SC I would recommend that use the old route. There is zero time savings and the road IMHO is horrible from the Kino highway to Libertad. One RV'r entered that road and turned around. We perserverd and really enjoyed PP. We will return next season on the new road but we are in a Classic Bluebird that can handle the road. I would NEVER take our Dynasty down that road!

I am with moisheh on this - take the divided highway from San Carlos to Santa Ana head west on the new road (toll road too) to Caborca then onto Penasco. There is a bit of traffic on this 2 lane from Caborca to Penasco as there are mining and agri-business here. Plus the trucking companies are now using this road to access the new coastal highway from Penasco to San Luis (unintended circumstance to the new coastal route) drive during day (traffic reasons) if you leave early and be patient you will wind up in Penasco in about 7 hours
