We just got into Florida (Tropical Palms) for spring break and I have to ask if there is an odd compound in the Florida section of I-75 that just makes people spin out and some times role over in the ditches? We had the normal accidents of people driving way to fast or not paying atttention on the way down from Michigan but the minute we hit the Florida line it seemed that all heck broke loose. (5 accidents between the state line and Orlando) We did have several "micro-bursts" of very heavy rain but geez, it wasn't as though most folks had never driven in rain. I almost seriously wonder if the roads simply don't have enough crown to shed the water. That along with people not grasping the very real chance of hydro-planing is about all I can come up with except for maybe some bald or almost bald tires and perhaps oils coming out of the pavement after a long drought. Am I missing something??

The compound is not part of the road , but part of the driver !
It is spring break - drivers are never focused on driving .
Drivers ( Tourists) are not required to read , speak , or understand English , but they can rent any car in America !

Just the way it is during vacation periods. You ought to see it Thanksgiving week...crazy southbound on Wed...worse on Sunday northbound.
Just imaagine what it would be like if folks from all over the world converged on Cedarville at 80mph in the rain.

My parents moved from NH to Fort Myers, FL 10+ years ago when they retired. They gave me 2 pieces of advice when driving there:
1) "Black Ice" - in FL, black ice is the beginning of a rain storm when the first rain drops lift the oils off of the road and create a bit of a shine on the road. It kind of looks like black ice on the road in the winter in New England. People with their year-round bald tires hit these slick patches and spin out.
2) At any signal-controlled intersection always wait 2-3 seconds after the light turns green for you, before even entering the intersection. There is a better than good chance that some inattentive retired person will not even stop for the stop light and drive straight through the intersection - right in front of you.

That's why we take US 19 South to US 98 and then the Suncoast Parkway. Always see accidents on I-75 rain or shine.

Interesting observation. I have been going to Florida for 30 years and must say that I have never seen or experienced such a situation. Maybe just lucky.

I drove from ft. walton beach to orlando and back every weekend for 2 years. When it rained 75 just north of gainesville resembled a pin ball machine with cars crashing in every direction. People drive like retards on 75. The pine trees that line I-10 instead of guard rails have bark missing about every 1/4 mile for the full distance. Saw wrecks on there at least once a month lots of them were fatal because of the trees. Probably all of them were from people dozing off.

We have had a serious drought this year, when it rains the oils come up and it is slippery, we stay off the road for awhile if we can. I got caught on 27 the other week and stayed as far from the other drivers as I could.
