Davydd - That '06 Sprinter screen is ingenious! What was the magnetic tape used for?

We ultimately ended up with the disk magnets as the drawing shows as the magnetic tape did not quite have the power to hold the screen against the metal body. Also the magnets to hold it at the top didn't hold well enough so we added the plastic hooks to hang on the gutter. The magnets still worked to hold the screen tight to the body. If I did this again I would add a few more magnets to hold the screen to the body sides. You could also experiment with magnets to snap together where the shirring overlaps to join the two pieces like the Magic Screen. Maybe the magnetic tape without too much holding power as that is what parts for you to go in and out.

On the drawing the right hand panel is the panel that covers the door opening where you go in and out. The left panel just closes off the rest of the opening behind the metal sliding door. The whole screen is designed so there is no need of additional attachments to the van body itself. It is all held in place by hooks, weights and magnets. Just one piece of velcro was used to hold the two panels together at the top.

BTW, the homemade screen did not keep the cat inside. She could slip out at the bottom.

It comes with a Great West Van Legend. It is a design they created for their Bs and they sell it as an option but I haven't seen a Great West Van lately without it installed. As I said earlier, I haven't a clue why the other converters haven't figured out a solution. Right now, if you want that sliding screen you'd have to buy a GWVan. Closing off a Sprinter sliding door is not an easy task being a big and irregular that it is. The newer model would be more difficult than the 2006 and older models.

So glad to find this...I was thinking about how to make or get screen doors for my 2011 Sprinter.

Any chance the Great West Van people would sell a screen door or be willing to install it on a van of another brand?

Also, what about screens for the back doors? I seem to recall hearing that PW made them but I haven't seen them...

Purple, for the rear doors, you might check the Roadtrek website. I know my '02 Chevy 190 came with a temporary screen 'door' for the side doors that installed with Velcro. Same for the '00 Dodge, except for the rear door. I'm pretty sure they came with the vans new.

I'm guessing that RT offers them as an option, and if they have have them for your year Sprinter, they'd probably fit. I assume they were made by a 3rd party, not RT, so also google 'Screenz' (and various other commercial mis-spellings like 'Skreenz') and Bug-Barrier.

You would have to ask Great West Vans that question. The sliding door and frame part should fit any Sprinter. The closing off the rest of the opening is what varies among the converters. I don't know why Great West Van would want to do it for other converter vans. That is one of their major differentials. Besides, the other converters need to come up with their own solutions.

As for the back, it should be rather easy, and I think most all converters have a solution and offer it. If not, there are third party suppliers. Even though Great West Vans had a back door screen I went with the recommendation of my dealer to buy a third party screen that worked better and stayed in place.

This is my screen:

This is how it looks rolled up out of the way:

We just bought the "magic mesh" for our Roadtrek and it did not work. The curve of the door does not allow the magnets to reconnect when you open them to exit or enter. We have the original screens for the RT, but they are a pain to use. Going to work on a plan B....not sure what that is yet, but will post if I come up with something.

Just so we know not to repeat their mistakes - what part of the RT screens make them a pain?

The side entrance door. Once installed you have to zip open and close a small section of the screen to enter and exit. Not worth the effort. Hard to get in and out. We would use it for our dogs mostly, so the door could be open and they could look out. Like anything, it seems you are always going in and out of the vehicle for something.
