How can I clean some old cushions? I cannot take the covers off because it looks like the cushions have heavy cotton in them or some type of old filling in them. I wanted to clean them because I have allergies. I was thinking of steam cleaning them, but wasn't sure if that is a good idea. Any siggestions are welcome. Thanks again.

Mightn't it be better to just replace them?

Unless you're dealing with a delicate fabric, such as silk, hot water extraction would be a good choice. You can rent a 'Rug Doctor' at most large grocery chains. Get the accessory "upholstery tool" and a good de-greaser to pre-spray on the fabric. Use as directed. Let the chemicals do the work. I'd also pick up some Scotch Guard and spray on the fabric after the cleaning to replace the protection. For big jobs, you can find the Scotch Guard in the gallon size for a lot cheaper at a janitorial supply house. You'll need a pump-up sprayer for that application. Good luck.

the fill might be causing the problem since it will hold lots of dust

They don't smell bad. I just wanted to clean them as best I can. I really don't have the money to put out for new cushions. Maybe I will try steam cleaning them and allowing them to dry.

x3, and after cleaning, put them outside on a warm sunny day to dry, it will air them out and make them smell a little fresher.

One method might be to cut the short seam. pull out the cotton batting (put in a large garbage bag), wash the covers, restuff the cushions and hand stitch the seam. Cut the seam as small as will allow you to get your hand in there to pull out. I just did this with two LARGE pillows. Took some time but VERY clean covers. Just a thought. Another thought is to buy new foam blanks and reuse the covers. I have an old Morris chair that had extremely hard 'horse hair' cushions and was able to order new foam pieces. I did make simple new covers cause I wanted funky leopard print. ;0)
