I worked at KSC for years and was able to go to the visitor center many times. There is ample parking which is rarely filled. There is also a section for bus parking. The KSC security gate check entrance is after the turn in for the visitor center so no worries about that. When the Space Shuttles were launching the security checkpoint would be moved out past the visitor center entrance, but alas, those heady days are gone until a new program is implemented.

No - not in the Vehicle Assembly Building.
We were there last week and there is a tour that gets you into the VAB and they are decommissioning various shuttles there now - but NOT in the VAB. The tour guild, while on the tor, pointed out various buildings that were being used for Shuttle decommissioning, but none of them was open to the public.
All in all it was a great trip and we enjoyed it much.
When I was a teenager my parents took me on a visit to KSC. Back in those days the tour was fantastic. You got real close to things.
Luckily, a KSC subcontractor had an oops on something an I got a visitor pass for the "oops".
I had a few hours to wander around KSC and thanks to previous security clearances I had little restrictions.
I did not push it but had a wonderful self guided tour during my couple of hour break.
I would have traded the day for nothing but got closer to 10K for my consulting engagement.
There is little work there now and I have no way to duplicate my teenage experience with today's restrictions.
I encourage everyone to take every opportunity to see KSC. Who knows what the future holds. We went to see 3 launches of the shuttle and as luck would have it they all went even if we had to stay an extra day for one of them. Thank god we owned an RV for the delayed launch.
I do not see things getting better in the future and would recommend going early and often. I know I will even if the viewing is not as good as in the past.
Been there a few times and there's no problem when it comes to finding enough room for parking even large rigs and when it comes to security. We were fortunate to have been able to visit twice here in the past and see a space shuttle launch. Gotta admit whenever we go and visit now, no matter how much stuff there is to see and do here, there is that feeling that something is missing and the trip is just not complete. *sigh*
