I have a 36 Ft 5th wheel weighing around 15K. I was considering driving west from Calgary to Rt 93. then north to Rt 16 then west,NW on Rt 40 thru Cache Creek on to Grand Prarie. Anyone who has done this who can tell me if this route is OK for this rig. Are there many grades to pull?
thx

The only major climb is at the Columbia Ice Field which is approx. half way between Lake Louise and Jasper on Rt 93. Going from south to north is not as bad as the north to south way. The south to north is more gradual with places to pull off if you're running hot. I've pulled a 33 Ft 5th wheel weighing around 12K without problems. Just take your time. Try to take on as much fuel as possible at Calgary as there is fuel along the way, but it is expensive, especially in the national park. Also please note it is Grand Cache and not Cache Creek on Rt 40.

After you turn at Hinton to go north the road is narrow and has a few decent hills. Take your time and you will be fine. As you leave Grande Cache towards Grande Prairie the road is much better a wider and also has a few decent hills. Make sure your brakes are in good shape and adjusted and you should be fine. It is beautiful country up there. We head that way each year for a hunting trip and it doesn't get any better.

Sparky 502 is correct. Hwy 40 from Hinton to Grande Cache is narrow with no shoulders (although they are widening in some places) and only the odd passing lane (not really a problem for us RVers but REALLY problematic for everyone behind you! A lot of people here seem to be in a hurry and we've has some real morons pass in less than ideal circumstances, so be careful).
Heading north there is a long steep grade down into the river valley just after Grande Cache town limits so take it slow in low and you'll be fine. Once you pass Grande Cache the highway is newer and has decent shoulders which is nice to have especially with the volume of oil patch rig vehicles on the road.
Enjoy our fine country! Are you planning on overnighting in Grande Prairie? There are several campgrounds around here...not really sure which ones are full service though as we camp at the provincial ones that only have power.
