We're planning to drive from PA to Colorado and we heard that I 80 used to be a pretty bad road. Has anyone taken that route recently?
Thanks

We were on it some last fall and took it to SF, CA. It has been years since I took it to PA. I do not rememeber it being bad enought to stick out in my mind. While we were on it some in the mid west we were on it most from Great Salt Lake to Pacific.

Last time we were on I-80 all the way through PA was 2009. Just fine at the time, but that was then. I did the stretch from the NE extension of the PA Turnpike west to Rt. 15 back in late March. I seem to recall a couple of construction zones just east of the Bloomsburg exits. There is one rough stretch of pavement in Carbon County. The rest was fine.

The section around the southern tip of Lake Michigan, i.e. Gary, Chicago has been greatly improved in recent years. The traffic volume is still pretty intense though.

The section west of the Mississippi is a very good road. We traveled west on it a year ago. The last time we took the section through IL, OH and PA, it was about the worst road in the US, which was in 2009.

Your going to hit pretty substantial tolls across Ohio and Indiana. Good road all the way.
I-70 is a good alternative with no tolls.

What is the prefered route from Elkhart to I-80 west of IL, without getting on I-80 at Elkhart? We are going to Columbus OH and then Elkhart for some RV repairs next spring and when we head home to Idaho, I want to stay away from I-80 in IN and IL. Thanks

If you don't want to use I80 near Elkhart you are pretty well limited to 2 lane roads. Getting to Elkhart you might consider US 33 or US20.
Leaving Elkhart one possibility would be to go north out of Elkhart to US12 and then west to I 94. I94 runs into I80 near Gary but from there you only have one toll to get through Chicago.

I would rather take the 2 lane, then get back to 80 well west of Chicago. What is the best route doing that? I despise the traffic in the greater Chicago area and we prefer 2 lanes anyway.
