Through everyone's suggestions here about Open Office I installed it on a new ASUS laptop yesterday. Open Office is everything you all said it was and more. The help menu is fantastic. If I can't find something, type it in "help" and there is a perfect explanation. I now have my default "save as" format as .doc so I don't forget. Now there is no need for Microsoft to get another $250. from me to send to Africa.

Thank all of you here for the recommendation to a great "FREE" program that does everything a $250. one does.

Glad to hear you are satisfied with it...yep, I have used it for years and have had zero complaints with it. Best of all it's FREE!

If you like that software, the next time Windows gives you fits via viruses, malware, or just plain poor design, give Linux Ubuntu a try. It is also free and can be installed on a separate partition so it will dual boot. Its very fast and doesn't require anti-virus software. You can even try it without installing it. Just drop the cd in the drive and it will load into memory. The only drawback to this is when you power down you lose anything you did as it isn't using the hard drive. Some people I know started out with the dual boot so they had Windows available only to find that they used windows less and less.

Ron and Charlotte - I was an early adopter of Ubuntu Linux . Worked great for a while. Now I cannot get it to work anymore. Windows works well these days. I have computers with xp, vista, and 7 on them. All work fine. I have not had a problem virus in ten years. There are excellent free virus and spyware programs.

Linux worked ok, but I never thought it was a good replacement for windows. Too incomplete. I have never tried open office. I do use google docs all the time. They work well. I am on my way to putting everything on line. Google drive is new and also works really well.

If Windows is working for you, Thats where to stay. I just see many posts where someone has a problem with a virus or malware and I get none of that with Linux. Another area where problems arise is installing new hardware like printers and scanners. They have it down so good now with Linux that in most cases it is just a matter of plugging the device in and it works. No looking for drivers, it just works. The last time I used windows it required setting up the machine for the internet. With Linux, it just works. I hear that Windows 7 is much better. Xp wasn't too bad, but Vista was a nightmare. So the bottom line is Linux isn't for everyone, but it is for me and I try to spread the word. Oh and did I mention its FREE.

Somebody who claims to be green, has to have a look at Linux.
I've just helped someone who owns a P4 which is not usable anymore: XP takes something like 1/2hr to boot (it goes into CHECKDISK all the time). The PC has no CD drive, cannot be booted by USB key. Any program run like a turtle.
I hooked up an external CD drive, popped in a Lubuntu 12.04, installed it using WUBI (Windows Ubuntu Installer), then we got a perfectly usable PC with Open Office (actually it's Libre Office now), Chromium Web browser, Thunderbird.
It doesn't cost a penny, what else can a poor student expect ? A PC like that, if you keep watching, can find occasionally in garbage dumps.

Powderman426 & cleo423 - I have to comment here. Linux is for tech savvy users not for novice. I earn my living with a computer and I used Linux for several years. Too complex for a novice or casual user! Windows or Mac os is far better for casual users. Or sox or android.

If somebody installs (Ubuntu, Mint) for him/her, I don't see the difference.
Remember that majority of Windows users also know nothing more than clicking on the icons. The only difference is Windows cost money and you can get/buy support, when Linux is free and you need someone else who is willing to help if you cannot do it yourself. I installed Ubuntu and its derivatives for several friends/relatives, got a lot of phone calls at first but not anymore after 6mo.

Been using Open Office for a long time.. Not only will it load (And save as) most microsoft formats but several non-microsoft formats as well.. I save in Open Office Document (et-al) format most of the time when using it. Saves time that way.. But when I was working for an election campaign I used a Microsoft format to be compatable with the others in the place.

That was true at one time, but not anymore. It is way easier to setup than Windows. It will find and install devices without intervention while holding Windows requires you to have or go download the proper drivers. Just drop the cd in the drive and hit the install button. Gee that was really hard.
