A guy next to me in the RV park is in a large motor home. He asked me about going north on Hwy. 1 from Morro Bay or should he go over and catch hwy. 101. I told him that I thought I had read on this forum that Hwy. 1 was not recommended for large rigs and that he would probably be better off taking Hwy. 101. Did I give him good advice? He's still here so I can change my answer if needed. I believe he was waqnting to go the the Monterey area.

I'm not sure what you mean by Central Valley CA. Is that a town or just all of San Joaquin Valley?
In any case, if you (he) is north of Santa Barbara and heading north towards Monterey, then I'd say yeah. The southern portion of Hwy 1 is not near as bad as the northern part. I've done both in my MH, and if a person really wants to see the California coast line, the southern part of Hwy 1 is very doable in a large mh. There are some tight turns, but not that bad. If someone has never been over it, I think I would recommend it.
However, the northern part (say from Fort Bragg and above) is one that I would not recommend.

Hallock5, thanks. That post seems to be more concerned with San Francisco north. I tried doing a search but couldn't find anything specific to my question.
Lanerd, the post stated from Morro Bay north to Monterey.

Santa Barbara to Morrow Bay is outstanding and RV friendly. From Morrow Bay to S.F. is beautiful and scenic. Can you drive your RV on this route? Yes, BUT the driver will see little of the coast of Hwy. 1 due the the many curves and small up and downs of the Hwy. I would not even start up Hwy. 1 until you call/go on line to Cal Trans to check the road conitions. Hwy. 1 is know for the rock slides along. 1. My preference would be to drive Hwy. 1 to Watsonville then cut over to Hwy.101 the continue as far as you wanted to go north up the Calif. coast. To be objective, yes many people have driven their rigs all the up Hwy 1 to S.F. across the Golden Gate including me. BUT I enjoyed Hwy. 1 the most when I was driving just my car or motorcycle. Enjoy your trip

It was good advice! There are parts of CA-1 that I personally wouldn't touch in a motorhome. They are best left to my motorcycle or Mini. I've seen signs north of San Francisco on CA-1 that state they should not be taken with a vehicle over 35', and it's for good reason.

You did good! I was just over that section of Hwy 1 yesterday. Unless your enjoy lots of twisting and turning, you are better off taking 101. Very scenic though.
