GVW of the the trailer. Bigger is always better in this case. IMHO

X2
As the GVW weight goes up (16k) so does the pin ratings. IIRC my 20k has a 5k pin rating

A 5th wheel trailer hitch has two ratings much the same as a pull trailer hitch. The first is the gross weight of the trailer and the second is the pin weight. As an example many Reese 16k hitches are rated at 16,ooo lbs total trailer weight (trailer GVW)and 4000 lb pin weight. NO you can not tow a 20,000 GVW trailer with a 16k Reese.

Have always been told, if its a 16,000 lb rated hitch. That it could pull 16,000 lbs. So take a trailer that weights 18,000 lbs it would still work with the 16,000 lb hitch. As your pin weight takes that much off how much your towing.
Not like a bumper hitch where all the towing weight is hanging off the ball.
Pete

How do you figure that? The hitch still has to support and tow the Max weight of the trailer, so that means pin weight + trailer weight = Max hitch size.

Would love to see a picture of this? As I know you had to take a few. That is like Seeing Big Foot.

Also guys I could be wrong about the ratings. I have been wrong a lot of times. But always learn from them.
