I'm headed from Salt Lake to Klamath Falls next week. S&T is showing the quickest route is to Winnemucca to 95 to 140. 140 in Nevada seems OK from what I've found. I am genuinely concerned about 140 from the Nevada border to Lakeview, OR. Mountain West Directory says the road is rough.

I'd like some first hand guidance. There aren't a lot of options but I don't want to get in over my head. I am 41 ft plus a Jeep Wrangler toad.

Any first hand experience or guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks, Grant

I would believe MWD.

I80 to Reno, exit to 395

395 to Susanville

36 to 44 (turn right)

44 to 89 (turn left)

89 to I5, then exit in Mt Shasta at hwy 97 exit

catch 97 and take it into Klamath Falls.

I think that is all correct.

Have a good trip

140 is a well traveled road, by cars and trucks, but is a lonely desolate trip. We have not done the entire road, just the NV section, to some good, off road areas. We see large RVs and 18 wheelers on it in both directions, so it must be doable.

To the above post: 44 to 89 (turn left). You would want to turn right.

I have read on here that 140 is Okay, but have not been on it. I would look at google earth, with street view, and make the call.

140 is a great road, you can see deer, antelope, and wild donkeys. Even saw elk once. You should have no problem on it, and great views.

Winnemucca to the Sea Highway in Oregon is an OK road for you. There is one section at Doherty Slide that is rough and narrow and about a 5% grade for about five miles. No big deal. Maybe it has improved as it has been awhile since I was over it.

Not anything for service so have your fuel when you leave Winnemucca. It is open range country so watch for live stock.

It's been a few years but it was a nice drive. Be sure you have a full tank of fuel because there is no place to fuel after you leave the junction. It was a little rough in spots but not a show stopper. We looked for the wild donkey's but never saw any. As I said, it was a few years ago. JMHO

We were just on the 95/140 route to Lakeview a month ago coming back from Winnemucca. You won't have any problems, by and large a good road, just 'lonely' in spots. We tow a 28' Passport and we did just fine. Be sure you fuel in Winn as the fuel costs on 95 are not good. Take your time as there are some good grades here and there. Have a good trip.

Been that route five times in the last three years. As others have said, decent road with some good scenery, wildlife, and views. Somewhat hilly and mountainous but without traffic. It is lonely out there so do fuel in Winnamucca, NV. I recall flying j is on the west side of town so it is just west of your turn off to the north. No real problem for you on the route. Did this with 40 foot mh towing jeep grand cherokee.

My brother (now retired) used to patrol that road for OSP. I remember him telling me that two or three times a summer they would get a "driver freeze up" at the top of Doherty Slide. Someone would see the shere drop off with no guard rail and would freeze up unable to move any further. My brother would have to drive the rig down the grade for them, then get a ride back up to the top to his patrol car.
