Mathmetician designs revolutionary wide angle mirror that could eliminate blind spots and the NHTSA 45 year old regulation of side mirrors prevents it's usage. It's good enough for space telescopes but not for the average joe on the road.

Laws and regulations are always behind development. That is the nature of things.

Saw that a few weeks back.I would buy them even if he stated "not highway legal". You have to love the government rules at times.

Not sure about this. I looked at the normal mirror and saw what I've been seeing for 47 years. Then I looked at the new mirror. The car that looked right behind me in the one looked w-a-a-y back in the other. Some one getting a car with one of these and not making the adjustment could make some serious mistakes.

I think the point is to demonstrate what can be done. IMO the mirror shown is way too wide, but something around 20-25 degrees using the same formula would be great. The blind spots in these new cars is amazing. Something really needs to be done to help the problem.

I'm guessing that the problem is that objects appear way farther away than they really are. So you get rid of the blind spot but you have to readjust your distance perception.
Note that this has to work with all kinds of people and this is where regulations come in. It has to be tested a lot beforehand instead of letting the people themselves testing it. Cars can and do kill people easily.

For many years the etched warning on the right hand mirror has read "objects in mirror are closer than they appear" so what's different?

X2, I run European "E-Code" H-4 headlights in all my vehicles which have replaceable lighting. Far superior beam pattern with a sharp cutoff on low beam to prevent blinding oncoming cars. Not legal of course, DOT mandates a certain amount of "scatter" in headlights.

It's not legal on the drivers side to have any distortion in the mirror. I'm not necessarily agreeing with the law, but that is the law as it stands.

I've gotten several rental cars that are phenomenally bad at obstructing the view. It's almost like I'm looking through portals. I've heard the reason is because of stricter rollover protection rules and side impact air bags. Perhaps we've gotten ahead of avoiding the accident to begin with.
