Had the same problem last summer. It was the studder vent under the kitchen sink that was open.Screw it out and replace with another one.I paid $1.75 for mine @ a camping store,so its sure not much too it.By leaving your valve open outside this lets the smell travel up thru your pipes, and out the bad studder vent.If you have water in the p-trap there should be no gas smell getting thru that way.

Under the kitchen sink, you will see the drain pipes coming from each sink. Where they make the "T" to go into the floor, you will see the pipe going up and a "cap" on top. That's the ambient one-way valve. It unscrews and you can get one at Home Depot or Ace Hardware for 3 ro 4 buck. The bath and shower both have "P" traps that prevents back gasing.

When you leave the gray tank valve open, all the food, and soap residue from the kitchen settles on the bottom of the tank and starts stinking.

Change the valve because that rubber flapper gets hard and doesn't complete the suction to cut off back gasing.

Once every couple of weeks, I use 4 to 6 ounces of Hottub defoamer from Wally world, and some lemon scented non-sudsy ammonia. I close the valve, let a couple of gallons of water go into the tank, put the chemicals in and let sit for 30 minutes, then drain. Good Luck

X2 and the so called "cheater vent" would be the first thing I would change. Available at home centers for around 8 bucks. Had the same problem as the OP and the cheater vent was the culprit. Then can be changed in about 30 seconds.

Clean the trap and NEVER use laundry detergent in your sink drains.

Why is that?

I'm curious also.

Because he said so? We use Happy Camper all the time and never have a smell. Great stuff.

Ours started smelling. I took of the vent cap under the sink, thinking it was stuck open and almost puked it stunk so bad. Drained the tank then put a couple of cups of bleach in it. Never stunk again. Have not heard that bleach will hurt the valves. Hard to believe when it is used in every day home use.

I am unable to locate anything under the sink that looks like any type of valve.

Its also possiable too have seperate vents, vented out up thru the roof.Could be a bird nest or dirt dobber nest clogging the vent on the roof.Just another thought if no studder vent.

Take a picture of the piping under the sink, upload the picture to picasa, photobucket or some other josting site and link to it here. Someone may be able to spot it then.

Do a search of "The GEO Method". That should help your problem.

Do you have a bathroom sink or shower besides the galley sink? Is there an odor at those drains also? This will better tell you if the problem is in the drain and/or the trap or in the grey tank. If they all smell, flush the grey tank with a diluted bleach and water mixture and then fill it with water through the sink drain. Let it sit for several hours. Then flush it with clean water several times and the smell should be gone.
