We went last year from San Diego. We went up 395 and then cut over east into the park. We stayed at Paniment Springs though. If you are staying at furnace creek I would just head out towards Las Vegas and turn north at Baker. We went just before we went to Quartzite in a group of about 8 motor homes. The weather in Death Valley is great that time of year. And it is amazingly beautiful place. You do need to take some hiking boots though.

No hookups at the big campground in Furnace Creek. There is a new RV Park at the east entrance to the park that does have them. The distances are big in Death Valley.

Not knowing where in L.A. you'll be coming from or what you'll be driving I'll give two routes both starting at the I-15N.

1st: I-15 north bound, 6% grade going through the Cajon Pass for several miles, go till you reach Baker,in Baker take Hwy127 north till you reach Hwy190 to DV and Furnace Creek inside DV. Hwy190 does become a down hill grade, easy. This route gives you only one long grade to climb at Cajon Pass.

2nd: same as above except you get off at Hwy395 in Hesperia, head north till you reach Trona Road turn off, head toward Hwy190 pass the town of Trona, take Panameint Valley RD to Hwy190, do not take Wildrose Rd your rig may be too long to make the hairpin switchbacks on this road. Once reaching Hwy190 head to DV, there will be a long climb of 6% plus grades, this will take you to Stovepipe Wells on the 190.
Note: fuel prices are very high in DV so fuel up before getting there and there is only two places inside DV to get fuel, Stovepipe Wells for gas only and Furnace Creek for diesel and gas. Cell phone service next to nothing. The 2nd route gives you two long climbs to make.
Hwy190 into Furnace Creek

If you want to know more about what to see in DV feel free to PM me

You'll love it in January - best time. I'm jealous, DV one of my favorites in the whole country.

Any route in there is great, but we come in from the NW usually, over the Panamints.

I agree Trona to 190 then over and in. 190 grade is ~9% but road is good. 14 or 15 to 395/Trona 178 is your choice... roads are good either way.

Although if it rains I have seen the Trona to 190 connection (178) closed and had to take 190 all the twisty long way to 395 direct.

It is a BIG park. You will save a lot of time in and out each day to be in the park. But if you need hookups then probably outside is best.

Stovepipe Wellsis run by a concessionaire, their website shows 14 full hook up sites. I do strongly agree with smkettner about camping inside DV, it's a lot bigger than what people think it is. Is your VUE all wheel drive? and yes it would be your cheapest way of getting around. PM me if you have any further questions.

Thx Vue isn't all wheel and we will have a class C with us. We don't need hook ups.
