I know someone who can weld a hitch onto my frame to save $$. My question is will a mig weld be strong enough to weld a hitch onto the frame to pull around 1000lb bass boat?

If your welder doesn't know what kind of weld is required or if his weld will hold, do you really want him to weld it?

I would weld it with 7018 stick or E71T-11 fluxcore wire. Mig with ER70S-6 and 75/25 Ar/C02 will work too. Tig would be a waste of time and money in this application.

Much more important than the welding process you use, is proper prepping of the metal. Remove all paint, rust, dirt and grease from the areas to be welded.

Worked in weld shop for 30 years. If everything is properly cleaned and prepared the mig weld will be fine.

A mig weld will hold fine when done by a compentant weldor and have plenty of penetration. Stick/mig or tig , take your choice.
I would prefere a mig for that type of work.

Your trailer frame was built using MIG. Why would it not be good enough?
There is nothing inherently wrong with MIG. Like anything, just has to be done correctly.
