Hi, all. sometimes when I ride my bike for a while my groin area goes numb, and I mean numb; absolutely no feeling down there. After the ride the numbness gradually goes away and I'm back to normal. I'm worried about incurring any permanent nerve damage if I continue on this path. What is your opinion? Do you think changing to a different (i.e., wider) seat might help? I'm going to try it anyway but thought I could get some pointers from any of you who ride bikes. Thanks....
BTW, the bike is a 21 speed and seat height is appropriate for my leg length.

Go to a real bike shop. Tell them what's happening and they will get you a seat that will help to resolve that problem. For many years before the new improved seats, many avid bikers had problems like this and also had problems having children. It's not something to ignore and it's very "normal".
Sounds more like a blood circulation problem to me. Try taking a few strokes while standing up every few minutes and it will probably help with the circulation.

My bike came with a hideous seat that made me hurt in places I didn't even know I had. I replaced it with a Gel seat ($30) and it made all the difference in the world.
BTW, the only thing worse than the original seat was the "female" seat on my wifes bike. Those things can cripple a guy.

I am guessing you have a cruiser style bike, where you basically ride sitting down all of the time. If a new seat does not solve the problem, consider a recumbent bike/trike. They are kind of expensive but they are so cool. I read that they are the fastest bikes in the world, and that they were banned from bicycle races way back in 1934.
The Comfort Seat.. designed by a Boeing Aerospace Engineer...for men. Not expensive ($29.00, $39,99 and $49.00) and will stop the pain and that numb feeling you get after and during a long ride.

I have a Bontrager CRZ+ with the opening in the middle and it works well for the kind of rides we do typically in the 20 to 30 mile range. If you are into 100 milers you might look into a pillow!

Agree that it's a seat issue, and as someone mentioned, a common problem, but not something to ignore either. Like your Mom used to tell you about making faces..."Do that enough, and it may stay that way!"
A better seat is an easy enough fix, as is getting a pair of "cyclist pants", that have extra padding on the inner thighs and groin. You can wear them under regular pants, if you don't want to look to strange
If this problem continues, you probably should have a chat with your Dr.
