We stay at Dead Horse Ranch State Park in Cottonwood. Full hookups and great views. Trout fishing in season. Easy access to Sedona but far enough away that you don't get involved with all the tourist traffic. By the way, the 50' restriction on Rt89A is for TRUCKS. RV's are not restricted. You can verify this on the Arizona Highways web site. That said, if you are not VERY VERY comfortable with mountain driving, I would not recommend you run them with a rig. We've done both, the run to Prescott and to Flagstaff, pulling a toad but you have to know what you're doing, especially through Jerome.
If you get to Jerome, don't miss the Haunted Hamburger for lunch and/or the Asylum for supper. The Asylum is a very nice upscale restaurant and the hamburgers in Haunted are world class.

We stayed at Rancho Sedona on 2006 and liked it. Our last trip was at the end of July and things have changed a little since 07/07. Second the 17 to 179 route with your rig. A couple points. If using a GPS, the Rancho Sedona address is on Schnebly Hill Road. There is a turn off on 17 for Schnebly Hill Road. That end turns into a 4X4 road near thte top and your 40' footer will NOT make it over the hill.
Second, Within a few miles on 179 after leaving 17 our GPS told us to make a left turn to get to our destination in west Sedona. If your's tells you to make that left turn, DON'T do it. The crossing was washed out several years ago. Also there are 9 round-abouts between the Village of Oak Creek and the round-about at Schnebly Hill Rd. and Rancho Sedona. Large trucks and semis travel them all the time so they're not a hazard, just mildy annoying.

Thanks for the heads up, John. I'm very comfortable towing either the Jeep or our 20ft trailer. 7% grade for more than 10 miles gets a little tiring but standard up & down is fine. We've been in some poretty sticky spots so I keep mny eyes peeled!
Thanks again,

Steve, sorry but I made a mistake on my post. Dead Horse Ranch has 50A power and water, but a central dump. We still love the area and the people. Sorry again, must be old age or somethin'???
We also love Dead Horse Ranch State Park for touring Sedona. Very convenient and close to other attractions - Tuzigoot, Montezuma Castle, Verde train, Out of Africa. You can see the Jerome lights at night from your campsite - beautiful - however, don't try taking your motorhome to Jerome!! I really don't think it would be enjoyable to have one base camp to tour Sedona, Flagstaff and Grand Canyon. That is entirely too much driving. For Grand Canyon, stay IN the park at Trailer Village for a wonderful experience. The free shuttle bus stops nearby and you can take the shuttle all day long, getting on and off at will for a restaurant or a hike. Have a good trip!

So the trip is set, thanks to all of your great advice!
My vacation unfortunately, has hard start and stop dates unlike you lucky full-time folks! Trailer Village was booked for our size rig on the dates we needed so we decided to go with the Grand Canyon Camper Village.
We're arriving 9/29 to the GCCV and staying through Friday, 10/6. We're then moving to Rancho Sedona, checking in on 10/6 and staying through the 12th.
Again thanks to all the advice from you folks, we're going on a helicopter ride, taking the train through the canyon, going to Out of Africa for a day and finally, exporing Sedona, Oak Creek, etc for a week.
Again, can't thank you all enough for your helpful advice and kindness. We'll take pictures, video's and report back.
