Thank, Dan
After rereading and an after thought - is this a change from the past or has this always been the same?
If it is a change, than any of the suggestions may help.
If it has always been like this, its probably a Computer Memory. 2GB isnt all that much but should run ok - will depend on other demanding processes running concurrently with IE.

I use CCleaner to wipe all caches, log files and other cra* out of my system (7 pass overwrite level, but that's not necessary for most users) at time of boot-up in morning, and at end of day (and, after Google Earth sessions). You may want to explore this option....
Often, your CPU usage will jump up to 80~90% for a second or two, then settle back to normal (ie. settle back down to ~~240 to 560 MB ram occupied) after page loads...

Interesting, since two major independent net security testing organizations, both of which are not advertiser based, have rated the current version of Microsoft Security Essentials(MSE) among the lowest in protection(detection) capabilities of the major AV suites? Just look for yourself at av-test.org. Latest ratings for Protection - MSE: WIN 7(2.5/6) and WIN XP(2.5/6). AVG FREE: WIN 7(5.5/6) and WIN XP(4.5/6).
Personally, I'd rather rely on an AV package rated higher in protection or detection as there are many freely available third party tools to repair infections or malware. But you first need to know that you've been compromised, and not lured into a false sense of security because you're not receiving any alerts.
To the OP, you don't need to be concerned about the AVG alerts for browser memory use, as long as it does not effect the use or stability of your system. I get these all the time when using Chrome or Firefox, mainly due to the number of addon extensions I have installed, but just ignore them as it doesn't effect my system.

This has been doing this for a long time. I have run malwarebytes and on occasion found a few things but not recently.

When you run malwarebytes have you done a full scan or just a quick scan? Try running two full scans and see if something comes up more than once. Have you cleaned out the cache and cookies? If not do so.

That is a problem. It may be caused by a defective extension or plugin. A reset to default settings many times fixes that issue, but you should first backup your bookmarks or favorites as a precaution, by exporting to a separate file. If you delete your personal settings, you'll also lose any saved passwords.
Go into IE8 Tools>Internet Options and under the Advanced tab, click the "Reset" button toward the bottom, and follow the prompts to reset IE back to a default state.

Microsoft Security Essentials
It's free, integrates perfectly into the system, is developed by the company that makes the OS and is lite on it's feet. With the addition of any malware program if your running XP and not Vista or W7 the differences to a good user are at worst minimal and at worst for most of my users indistinguishable from anything else. Self updates without user intervention and never expires.
Again as others have said dump off the AVG(was a cpu hog that's why I dumped it)and try another. If your up to it another browser if that makes you feel good. IE has always worked well for me and actually better IMVHO than any other browser I've used. As usual YMMV.

AVG is Free. So are the updates. Oh, and toll-free phone technical support is also Free. You obviously have not installed the new AVG 2012 version which is also light on system resources, not to mention offering more security features than MSE. Dump AVG, and install an AV package which rates lower in protection? That makes sense?

It seems to me that MS will set many processes to run that the average user doesnt need.
Go to your Task Manager and uncheck the box "Show processes for all users". This will narrow down the list to the most obvious processes that may be stopped that should not affect the PC usage.

You may then sort by Memory(Private...) to get the most demanding process to the top. You can kill a process by right clicking the process and select Kill Process.
I dont know enough to be able to tell anyone what they do or do not need running but if you should attempt to kill a needed process Windows wont let that happen. If you do kill a process that affects general use, rebooting will put everything back as it was. No harm No foul.
Id love to see the top 5 processes based on Memory usage.
