There is a constant ticking sound from a relay type device in the engine compartment of my coach. The coach is build on a workhorse chasis with the big 8.0 engine. The coach has been parked for over a week and this ticking does not appear to stop. Is this normal! the coach was just MD inspected and the machanic said the coach was in great shape. He had to hear the ticking. Dummy me I forgot to ask him what that ticking sound was all about.

I have the workhorse chassis and it does not have any ticking sounds from the engine department.The only ticking that I've ever heard was the hour meter when the generator is running.

The only thing I can think of is a relay or circuit breaker kicking in and out, that's my 2 cents worth. Happy Campin..............Ron

Somehow you are going to have to track down the ticking sound to figure out what it is coming from. If it is a constant tick, like you said probably some kind of relay going off. Follow the sound and try to find the relay it is coming from. May be somethign shorted out too - (Starter solenoid?)
4 whopping cylinders on Toyota RV's. Talk about great getting good MPG. Also I have a very light foot on the pedal. I followed some MPG advice on Livingpress.com and I now get 22 MPG! Not bad for a home on wheels.

Most likely it's the isolator solenoid cycling in and out. Is your coach plugged into shore power when you hear the ticking?

Yes the coach is connected to shore power and actually the ticking does stop. It was not ticking today. You may have a point about shore power and the isolator solenoid. I keep the coach plugged in to a 30 amp line at my home when ever parked! I will check for the ticking during my planned first trip as I dont remember it when we overnighted bring the coach home from NC.

If the coach is plugged in all the time you probably need to keep a constant check on the batteries to make sure the water isn't being boiled out by the constant charging. I would bet you don't have the big 8.0, but the bigger 8.1 engine. I would check the relay prior to a trip to make sure you don't get stranded. A click like that could eventually run a battery down and leave you stranded. You can use a long screwdriver as a stethoscope on a non-running engine to pinpoint clicks.

I have never heard anything other than the normal engine noise coming from my Workhorse 8.1 engine compartment. I do however get a sound from the inverter located on the top of a storage bay that is adjacent/behind the engine compartment when I'm plugged into ac.

Are you saying that the inverter can overcharge the battery? It does not have a circuit to prevent that?
And thanks to everyone so far for their replies! The ticking did stop for now. It appears to come from a big square type relay which actually looks like two relays or a relay and a switch at the front and on the right side of the engine when standing at the front of the coach or port side for any boaters. It just may be the isolation solenoid, I am not sure!
