What do you use your smartphone or your GPS.

Just found 2 local ones near our home, thinking this might be fun doing while camping, at least it will get me off my duff and not drink so much beer.

Love geocaching. I use an eTrex Legend HCx. It is great fun while camping. Gives an added dimension when camping although I get sick of the park and grab micros. No thought goes into hiding or finding them. I have a couple of caches out and I like to make them more of a physical challenge than mental. At any rate, the challenging ones can be fun.

I love doing it by boat! I use the Geocaching.com app on my iPhone once I have identified viable caches through the website.

I brought up this same topic about a year ago. We love it, its fun good exercise and challenging at times. We do it on nearly every trip and at every rest stop on the way to our destination. My wife has some kinda app on her phone but I dont know which one.

I have a eTrex and have never figured out how to use it. I would love to geocach and will one day find someone at the same location as us to help me out. I have found some caches from the directions on line and it was fun.

Did dozens of them on our vacation last year. Lots of fun with the kids.

We geocache all the time while camping. We have a Garmin e-trex vista, I also use my IPhone with the geocaching App. We only use our phones in Canada as the cost for data else where is just too expensive. We are "Iflyrc2" on geocaching.com

Funny this subject came up, there was a program on Geo-caching on PBS today. We haven't gone in a while (since our handheld GPS was left somewhere, lol). I've been thinking about using my smart phone, but thought it would eat up a lot of data. Any first hand experience with usage? Thanks. (hope this doesn't hijack the thread)

We usually do a little of it while traveling if they are on the way or near by a campground. We use the ap for the cell phone to get the information then use a GPS to actually find it.

We cache on just about every camping trip. Gives us reason and opportunity to find interesting places off the beaten path. Since most caches are placed by locals, they know where all the good stuff is.

I'm not a fan of the smartphone GPS, because I see so many caches placed with poor coordinates, and usually from a phone. The GPS in the phones just isn't very accurate. Not to discourage anyone who uses that, but if you're going to stick with the game, you will probably want a real GPS. I am currently using the Garmin Oregon. The smartphones are a great accompaniment to the GPSr.
