According to what I have been told over the years, in the early days of Indiana, when a person knocked on the door, the owner would yell out "Who's Yar" for the person to identify themself which became "Hoosier". Do not know if this is really true, but it is the only explanation I have ever received.

Hoosier is a nickname for the longshoremen/boatmen on the rivers of Indiana for whooping the other folks.

As you can see from our own state web site, the origin of "Hoosier" is one of great speculation and you will never find a definitive answer but many opinions. I asked my granddad many years ago thinking he was old enough to know and he replied without hesitation " I don't care what you call me as long as you call me for dinner". That works for me!

Funny you should ask what a "Hoosier" is, as I was just discussing this with someone at work the other day. I'm originally from Ohio, and we always knew a "Hoosier" as being someone from Indiana. However, in Missouri (where I lived and worked for a while) they sometimes use the term "Hoosier" to refer to someone who is being stupid/dumb. So, I guess I will reiterate what everyone has already said in that it probably means a gazillion different things!!
