RE: ages of people on this forum

Me 49, DW 49 until two weeks from now. We've known each other since we were four. I am too young to be this old.
Two sons, 26 and 21 they still come with us once or twice a year. Sometimes we let them bring a friend.
Been camping since I was a toddler, wife started about 25 years ago when we bought a tent and took a family vacation to the White Mountains in New Hampshire. First class A when we were in our late 30's.

RE: Opinions Please on 1st big Family Trip

It is 1300 miles from our home to Ft Wilderness. We do it in two days. The first day is 16 hours drive and the second is 6.
We leave home, and if the first stage does not get us as far as we want to be, the next day is a little longer. For us, the first one mile is town road and then we are on the highway. We only stop when I need gas (and when I stop for gas that's when I use the facilities). Food and everything else is while we are on the move. We generally leave at 3:00 AM the first day to beat traffic through NYC and Washington, DC area. We do not pull anything. We usually pull out for the second day around 6:00 AM. We make sure to tell the campground office that we will be out early and ask for a site as close to the park entrance as possible to avoid bothering people who want to sleep.

RE: Cleaning Hydraulic Jacks

I have two jacks that come back slowly and sometimes need "help". I have resorted to placing wood blocks under them and would like to try the cleaning - I had heavier springs installed and that did not work. The RV Service shop tested the solenoids and said that the problem must be with the jacks themselves.
I always thought that you should not lift the rear wheels off the ground. Is it safe to do so if the front wheels are chocked?

RE: Water pump not pumping

I had this problem once. On the city water side there is a three way valve for city supply, tank fill or tank supply. Make sure that you are not set to city supply if you have that option. The valve creates an air leak and the pump can't build pressure.

RE: Backup Camera

I would stay away from any camera/monitor combination that is proprietary wiring. Look for stuff that is standardized. I know my color Sony system is much better than black and white (you'd be surprised how a white post disapperas on a black and white screen when there is glare but still stands out on a color system) but it has proprietary wiring meaning that the camera and monitor have to be compatible with each other. The Sony cameras are a little more expensive and for that reason, if I was to change it out I would opt for something that is a little more generic.

RE: Sandra Bullock/Jesse James Split

Wonder what will happen to his daughter by his other wife? The other wife, a porn actress with custody, went to jail for tax problems and asked James and Bullock to take the child until she was released. Upon her release she asked for her child back and Sandra Bullock petitioned the courts for full custody. Fromt he story I read, it seemed that James was all set to share custody but Sandra wanted full custody.

RE: Thougths/opinions on this tent?

When our kids were little we tent camped for quite a few years. Our first tent was a Sears 9x12 canvas cabin tent. I let someone use it and they packed it wet. The next time I went to set it up (at the campground, in the rain, on a Sunday in New Hampshire) it fell apart. We bought a tent at EMS, the only store open. They had a North Face umbrella type 5 man tent. We used that tent for 6 years until, once again, I let someone (same person) borrow it. He brought back a dining canopy.
The North Face tent was expensive but it stayed cool in the heat and warm in the cold - in other words it seemed to moderate exremes in temperature. We also had a 12X12 screen room that we set up over the picnic table. That way we could sit out at meal time without competing with the flies for our burgers.

RE: Disney tickets and camping in or near by

Look at going in October or the first couple of weeks in November and you will get off-peak prices. The weather is still pretty nice and the place is not nearly as crowded.

RE: Disney tickets and camping in or near by

The last few times we went, we stayed in Ft Wilderness. Things to consider:
1 - Staying in the park means no need to rent a car (moot point if you have a toad, which I do not)
2 - No car means no paying to park
3 - Staying in the park means you can go back to the site at any time to rest or eat in the camper - a huge advantage over buying food in the parks
4 - Multi-day passes start at 80 per person per day, but a 10 day pass is something like 275.00 per person. Point is, look at the multi-day passes and check oput the food plan options (great savings potential)
Also, if you are going to go to Universal, it is worth it to park the RV in a lot and stay in their hotel. If you are a guest at one of their hotels you get front-of-the-line treatment at most rides. using this feature can cut the number of days you need to visit in half. If you pay a little more and stay at the Hard Rock, you get preferred treatment at the Hard Rock Restaraunt. If you spend a few more dolars and stay in the concierge level, you can almost eat all three meals a day there and get wine and beer gratis.

RE: 110 elect Recp Problem

If you know the progression of the wiring, I would go to the middle of the circuit and remove the recepticle, cap the wires. If you still trip, the problem is from the middle back to the breaker. Cut it in half again. Don't forget that a light fixture may also be on the circuit.
Also, you may just swap two of the breakers out and see if the problem follows the breaker.

RE: Arlington RV Service in RI - Experiences?

I dropped the unit off two days ago with a list of things for them to do and asked them to perform any recalls.
They just called and it is all set, they got WH to agree to replace two calipers even though I was not originally on the recall list and they did everything else I asked for at just a little under what I expected to pay.
THEY ROCK amd I am psyched that I think I found a place that can be a one stop-shop for repairs.

RE: Generator shutting off on its own

One other thing - the heat and air conditioners are all usually on time delays. One of them may have a problem that is causing a high draw.

RE: Generator shutting off on its own

Is it still plugged in to shore power? If so, there could be a problem with the transfer switch. If not, there could be a circuit problem where something is causing a surge.
Turn off all the breakers in the rig and start the generator. If it runs for 5 minutes, turn on one of the breakers at a time for 4 or 5 minute intervals until you find the offending circuit.
If it does not run with all breakers off wither the generator or the transfer switch (or the custoff switch itself) would be where I would start.

Trailblazer on a Dolly?

I have a 2005 Chevy Trailblazer (or, my wife does), not the AWD version but the switch-selectable 4WD. My question is, can it be pulled on a dolly? I don't want to put a baseplate on it and cut through the bumper, but I would consider pulling it on a dolly equipped with brakes. I would secure it to the dolly then set it up the same way you would for towing 4 down.
Can that be done?

RE: Your most comfortable car

Gotta go with a 1978 Datsun 280 Z
Followed with a 1981 F-150 with buckets and arm rests - especially for towing. We could go for miles and miles!
Datsun 280Z? You must be kidding that those were comfortable cars. I had one and it seemed you could here every little rock that would hit the bottom of the car and the ride was horrific. Maybe you misunderstood the thread. Most comfortable riding car?
I had a 1996 Mustang Cobra Convert. It was a rocket ship, but you could feel the paint of a crosswalk when you drove over it. A squashed frog in the road sent a spike up your spine!
Boy was that car FUN!

RE: Arlington RV Service in RI - Experiences?

I bought two motor homes from Flagg and have been happy with the sales and service, but they can't deal with the chassis or the generator.
One lingering problem I have is with two jacks not retracting and they replaced all 4 springs - did not fix the problem. They are saying that they now think they have to replace the jacks themselves, I am not ready to fork over 1,200 to do that. I'll set blocks under the jacks and push tem up manually for a while. With one kid's college bills just about over and the second one's bills now due, I have no disposable income any more (I don't have lunch money for crying out loud).
I will say this for Flagg - when I had the Hurricane and the walls delaminated they went to bat with Four Winds for me and got the two side walls replaced at the factory at no charge even though the rig was out of warranty. When I had more problems with the Hurricane they gave me a great price on the Itasca and then gave me a fantastic trade on the Hurricane. They treated me very well and I would never steer anyone away from them, but I would qualify my recommendation with a statement that the service department sometimes needs prodding and they can't deal with chassis or generator problems. They were very concerned about my satisfaction after the sale and worried about their reputation when I was unhappy with the Hurricane.

RE: Washington DC ?

We stayed in Maryland, I don't remember the name but I'll look for it. We parked in the lot at Arlington National Cemetary every day and bought passes on the tourmobile that goes all around the DC area. The monuments at night are spectacular. I would plan some time in Arlington to see the changing of the guard and take the tour of the cemetary.
We also hit the waterfront in Baltimore one night for a meal at the Hard Rock and some shopping in the area.

RE: Your most comfortable car

I have had a lot of cars in my day. For business I used lease a new car every two years because of the miles I piled on. I have had Crown Victorias, a Cadillac Sedan Deville, a Cadillac ElDorado ETC, a Mercedes E-430, a Lincoln Town Car Cartier and now drive a Chrysler 300C.
The least powerful but by far the most comfortable was the Town Car. The best in the snow was a tie between the rear-wheel drive Mercedes E class and the ElDorado. The best overall car was the Eldorado for combination of comfort, power and all weather driving. The absolute worst car in the snow is the Chrysler 300C.
If your issue is a bad back and money is not an issue, I would recommend the Town Car and advise that a Mercedes, BMW or sport-touring sedan like the 300C will take its toll on you over a long drive.
I also have had a Tahoe, a Suburban, a Trailblazer and a few other cars as our second vehicle. The Suburban is a 1500 4WD currently with close to 200K miles on it driven by my son and it still rides decent.

RE: Found my stolen property for sale on Craig's List

My son had a Les Paul Black Beauty we bought for him as a Christmas gift. He loved that guitar. He joined a band and one of the band members lived with his grandmother, so they all left their equipment at his house set up in the basement where they practiced.
Son went to get the guitar one day and it was gone. He asked the kid where it was and the kid gave attitude and said if it was that important it should not have been left there (same thing I said). The kid then told him to get the rest of his stuff out of the house and not to come back. A couple of other things wound up missing, but the guitar was the big item.
I went to visit the house four hours later when I got home from work. "Dude, I told your kid I have no idea where that guitar is and I told him not to come back" with a smug smirk that just about set me off. I pointed out that a Black Beauty is a special guitar and you can't buy knobs, pegs or pick-ups for a Black Beauty without giving the serial number and the worn parts because they don't want people buying cheaper guitars and putting Les Paul parts on it. I then reminded him that the garage bands that played the local "shows" all knew each other, and I was pretty sure that there were not many Black Beauties on the circuit. I told him that the guitar would be covered under my homeowners, but since I had a 1000 deductible I would first offer a 1,000 reward for the return of the guitar. I explained that if it came back to me and I found out he knew who had it or had anyting to do with the sale of it, I would personally rip his arms off and beat him senseless with them. My son said the vein on my forehead that popped out as I made the statement was pretty convincing.
We then headed over to the police station to report the theft. Just as we were getting ready to leave my son's cell phone rang. "Hey dude I found the guitar in an upstairs closet!"
The cop thought that was pretty funny (I told him exactly what I said) and he went to the house to pick up the guitar for us. He read the kid the riot act, took the guitar and told the kid that he'd be watching him from now on.
The rest of the kids in the band wound up getting their stuff out of there and there were a few items they never recovered.

RE: Total Rebuild of a 1979 Dodge Class C

It is possible the hits on your card are holds placed when they inquired about the card status. Those holds should clear in 48 to 72 hours, depending on the card processor and the bank's policies. If they do not clear in 72 hours, file a dispute asap with the bank.
