Horsepower/weight ratio

A few months ago I saw a thread that discussed ideal horsepower-to-weight & torque-to-weight ratios and some formulas for calculating them, but now I can't find it. Can someone please point me to that thread? Thx

RE: Setting a maintenance "benchmark" for a coach w/o records

I would not touch it without someone I trust who has a lot of experience (Brett Wolfe, for instance) thoroughly going over every nook & crany of it. The $500 (low end) that you spend for this service would be very worthwhile. What do you know about the age of the house stuff, e.g appliances, electrical & plumbing systems, etc. These are smaller expense items than drivetrain components, but they can add up quickly. Don't ask how I know - just the voice of experience.

RE: Ladder for Motorhome

I have the 12.5 ft one that Ivylog mentioned - love it. Only problem you have to lean it against the coach as it's not a stepladder. I use a blanket between the ladder and the coach to cushion it so as not to scratch the coach.

RE: Possible fire hazard

I don't know if we actually had a fire, but the taillight (the upper section which is the 4-way flasher was not badly damaged) was completely destroyed along with all of the associated wiring. As Sowego said, the connecting flex is completely invisible and inaccessible. A periodic use of an IR thermometer might have detected the problem, but probably not timely enough to prevent extensive damage.

Possible fire hazard

A recent small fire in our '02 Tiffin Phaeton was caused by the tail pipe coming loose - rusted out maybe, don't know yet. The shop is still looking for parts to effect a repair. It completely destroyed the left taillight and associated wiring. So I would advise everyone to check for this condition on your own coach. I will do it regularly from now on.

RE: Need help with radio/ACC disconnect wire - 2010 CR-V

When I bought this car last year, I had a charge wire installed, but it proved unreliable on our last trip. I don't know why it failed, but on the last leg of our return trip we discovered the car battery dead. Anyway, through the process of trying to disconnect the radio/acc circuit, I accidentially pulled the wrong wire, discoonecting this fuse wire at the fuse panel end. The wire has a paper tag on it with the words RVPARTSPLUS.COM. It also has a fuseholder with a 7.5 amp fuse in it. I went to the Rvpartsplus.com website and found documentation and a video showing the installation of the "RVing Fuseswitch", as it is called. The beauty of this little device is that I NEVER NEEDED A CHARGE WIRE AT ALL OR TO EVER PULL A FUSE. All that I needed to do was flip that little switch on my dash to disconnect the radio/accessories circuit. The original owner of the car never mentioned this to me because he told us that he just started the car ever 200 miles and let it run for a few minutes to keep the battery up. I have no financial interest in this product or Rvpartsplus.com, but I highly recommend the RVing FuseSwitch to anyone who needs to disconnect a circuit in their toad. I think it is the best little product since canned beer!

Need help with radio/ACC disconnect wire - 2010 CR-V

The wire connecting the radio & accessories to the fuse panel has become disconnected. The wire has a 7.5 amp fuse in it which is removed to disconnect the radio & accessories when the car is towed by a RV. It was connected to position 34 as shown by the owner's manual, which is not a fuse but a slot with two prongs. My problem is the two small wires are colored red and black which would seem to indicate a polarized connection. But which way to plug them in? Does anyone have experience with this type of situation?

RE: Which would you choose: Monaco or Newell?

The Newell if I could afford it. They are not even in the class quality-wise. Newells are in the same class as Prevosts. What are the prices?

RE: Van Horn, TX is unfriendly toward RVers

OP here, and no it did not happen to me. I am a member of another RV forum where it was reported by a member. Follow the link and read the ordinance for yourself. Or, better yet, park at a truck stop or McDonalds for a couple of hours and see what happens.

Van Horn, TX is unfriendly toward RVers

RV'ers traveling east and west on I-10 in west Texas may find themselves with a ticket if they stop in Van Horn, Texas, when not staying in a campground. The ordinance wording allows Law Enforcement to assume all stops, any time of day or night are for sleeping, allowing an $85 ticket to be issued. Stays over 4 hours is mentioned, but is much easier to avoid RV Unfriendly towns than to argue over a sheriff’s stopwatch accuracy. We understand that there are no signs on the recent ordinance that target RVers and not trucks. An RVer stated they pulled into the truck stop parking area, where they have stayed many times before, right behind McDonalds for a nap and breakfast. When they awoke several hours later, there was a ticket taped to the windshield. “Violation of City of Van Horn ordinance 12/2010. Fine of $85 payable by money order only." Here is a link to the Anti-RV Ordinance:  Title 12 - STREETS, SIDEWALKS AND PUBLIC PLACES . The City Manager has said she was pressured by the RV Parks in her City to enforce the Ordinance. It may be time to send emails to the City of Van Horn, TX telling them of our displeasure. Our feeling is that since Van Horn, TX is RV unfriendly we will just not give them our business. Here are Van Horn email addresses: City Manager:  franmalafronte@vanhorntexas.org Mayor:  okeylucas@vanhorntexas.org Publisher, Van Horn Advocate:  lsimpson@vanhornadvocate.com Van Horn Economic Development:  edc@vanhorntexas.org   432-283-7494 Van Horn Visitor’s Bureau:   info@vanhorntexas.org    866-424-6939 CHAMBER OF COMMERCE DIRECTORS: 432-283-2043 Sooky Borrego, President Larry Simpson, Vice President Patricia Golden, Secretary/Treasurer

Motorhome values

We are planning to trade up in a year or so. I am very interested in Foretravel coaches, models U295 & U320. I recently went to nadaguides.com to try to get some idea of what a 2001 Foretravel U320 would sell for. I entered just the basic info, e.g. year, make, & model. The website tells me this coach has a gasoline engine, but Foretravel, to my knowledge, has never made a gasoline-engined coach. This problem seems to be unique to Foretravels. I have searched for other ways of approximating the value of Foretravel motorhomes, but have found nothing. Any ideas?

RE: A newbie needs help!

You have CoachNet - just call them. If they can't or won't handle this for you, they will tell you.

RE: Motor Home Sale

I think what rgatijnet said is the approach that I would take, but I would ask a bunch of questions to try to ensure the prospective buyer was serious enough for me to go to the trouble of giving a test drive.

RE: A newbie needs help!

OP, How long would your extension cord need to be to reach your coach? If it is more than about 25 feet, use as large of a diameter cord as you can find. What GBomkamp is referring to are a couple of issues. First, a small diameter cord over about 25 feet can overheat and cause a fire. Second, the 120 volts at the end where it is plugged into the outlet can be so low at the coach as to cause damage to your coach's converter. With the right cord you can probably get your rig going again. Hope this helps. Merry Christmas.

RE: TST monitor

If you are using the readings from the Milton guage as your initial settings, that maybe where some of the difference is. I found that the Milton guage is about 4 to 6 psi higher than my Accutire electronic guage and about 8 psi higher than TST. My advice is to get a good quality guage, whether electronic or mechanical, that you can trust.

RE: STARTING BATTERY COMPARTMENT WIRING

OUR401K, It might be easier for us to help you if you take some pics of your battery compartment as it is now and post them here. Do you have a volt-ohm-meter and know how to use it? Are either of the cables marked in any way? Find one of them that goes directly to the coach frame/chassis - that will be your negative. The negative battery post will have a dash (minus sign or negative) on top. Good luck.

RE: Ready to buy Honda Fit for dinghy..advice?

We checked out the Fit when we were toad shopping, but were not comfortable with the ride and small size. We found a used 2010 CR-V - we love it so much we are selling our larger car because we never use it anymore. Good luck with your search.
