RE: Camping in this economy

Yes, it is MUCH cheaper than hotel, etc on vacation. And I think it's growing in popularity I wonder if it's because of that reason...I have to book weekend trips way in advance no matter what State Park we're going to it seems. They are very popular.
I know with our family, there's NO WAY we could vacation this much if we didn't camp (we just love camping, too, it's a bonus that it's cheaper); especially with 4 kids we have to get "suites" to hold 6 people.

RE: newbie questions on black water tank and campgrounds

We bought our first RV last summer, with no experience w/ RVs at all.
I agree w/ the other person to go ahead and get the full hookup this first trip. It will much less stressful for you to dump and figure out your system without a line of RVs behind you at the dump station. (and usually there's a line at the dump station if you're leaving on Sunday)
We didn't do that, but it's a very good idea!

RE: vrv toyhauler

Congratulations! You'll have to let me know what you think once you get it & use it. I've thought about trying to get my husband to go for the VRV XRT, because he won't go wider than 6 ft, and we could get 3 more ft of length w/ 6x19....
but I digress....
Did you order the turquoise?

RE: Lightest Weight Hybrids

You might want to check out Livin Lite, they make all-alumium, including the framing. We have their VRV model, a hybrid toyhauler. They also have more traditional RVs, called CampLite, and you can get tipouts on those, too. All that aluminum is more expensive though.

RE: Tent Camping Forum

If it's usually 3 people, I'd look at a 6 man tent.
We had 2 adults and 4 little kids in a 6 man tent and it was tight. The kids would roll over and end up on top of each other. mhampton is right, the "footprint" for occupancy is literally laid touching each other with no room to spare. I came to look at it like "Technically they could squeeze 6 bodies into this tent" but it wasn't very comfortable or realistically feasible.
We've had Eureka, ALPs, and Kelty tents; and I put them in order of how we liked them. Our Eureka tent was older, and don't know if their quality is still the same.

RE: Help Me Understand

What's wrong with tents? I agree w/lfcjasp, that's what we wanted! We don't have a/c nor a kitchen. I ALMOST didn't get a bathroom but over 40 I can't make it through the night w/o peeing at least once, so I'm glad I did get the bathroom...the middle of night flashlight trot to bathhouse WAS getting old.
Actually, we needed more room for gear transport really and a hybrid toyhauler fit the bill for that, while giving us the extra space to move around when getting ready for bed, getting dressed in morning, etc.
I mean, I'll be honest, I look at the all-hard sided loaded up "house on wheels" and it's not for me. Maybe as I get older but still want to camp, it might be if I find aging changes forcing me to spend more time at the campsite & inside the RV. But, for me, that will be my "last ditch" effort to still be able to keep camping, even if it is in a house-on-wheels. But I realize there's a LOT of people out there that love it like that and feel they get more enjoyment out of camping with certain conveniences. Conversely, there are some people that would say staying in a developed campground in a tent isn't "real camping" to them. The spectrum is really broad. Knowing all the options, but what YOU like/want is what's important I guess.

RE: i'm on a boat..no its a camping trailer.. why does it move?

We had homemade X chocks & the stabilizers in back that came on our trailer. But it didn't stabilize until we bought some cheap stabilizing jacks and put underneath, toward the middle of our trailer.
(our RV is small & lightweight, so we could get cheap ones for $20)

RE: Help Me Understand

I wonder if people that prefer all hard-sided trailers ever camped in tents? Now that I think abou it, the people that I know that have all-hard rvs were never tent campers. The people I know that have some canvas on their trailers were tent campers in their younger days. I'm sure this isn't true for everyone, but I wonder if it's a majority??

RE: Help Me Understand

Personally I would rather have a tent than a totally hard-sided trailer. The hybrid is the best compromise for me - it got me off the ground after 40 & with more room for supplies that comes w/ 4 kids. I could change my mind as I get older, but for now and the foreseeable future it's a good compromise. For now, we spend our time camping running around, only in trailer at night & maybe meals and I love the sounds of nature, the fresh air, etc being carried over into the night.

RE: vrv toyhauler

CoyleClan, we tow w/ a Honda Pilot and have a Livin Lite 6x15. My husband wouldn't go any wider, so I don't know if it would be a problem to tow w/ that. It tows the 6x15 okay.
ADDING SHELVES: How do you go about getting after-market shelves & storage put in?

Sharp! Is that charcoal? I couldn't decide between charcoal or pewter, ended up getting pewter.

RE: Show us your Livin Lite VRV!

WoodGlue, I also wouldn't say they're for cold weather camping. (But they are great in the summer!) We don't have any a/c or heat in ours. We just camped in TN and it was cold, rainy, in 30s at night. We had a $10 electric space heater that kept us warm. But it left me thinking that in colder weather you'd have to really put effort into equipping it to keep warmer.

RE: Cumberland Gap Wilderness Road

I've been looking at that one, too. Wxtoad, thanks for posting that link w/ the pictures.
I'm scared to chance it w/ no reservations!
We stayed at the Bandy Creek campground in Big South Fork Rec Area, which is west of Cumberland Gap. They had a swimming pool. And took reservations.

RE: Interesting Concept For A Pup

I looked at that brand, LetsGoAero, to haul our bicycles for local use; and they're expensive! They also have a trailer/tent setup that's more like a "jumping jack" trailer. Prices run $2,000 - $3,000.

RE: ATC trailers

We got a 6x15. Really, our family (with 4 kids) would be better off w/ the 7x18 but size & weight were issues.
We don't have refrigerator or a/c or battery or anything like that.
We did get rear screen and LOVE IT.
We had our dealer put in folding aluminum bunk beds from LiftCo company, but husband & I both wished we'd gotten that 2nd tip out instead. The tip out opens it up so much.
Something that surprised us, this RV is much cooler than a tent. I often have to get up in the night and turn the "ceiling fans" off and sometimes close the door...on nights when in a tent we'd be sweating our butts off.
With the 8.5x22, you'll have lots of storage space. We don't tow motor toys, just 6 bicycles and other stuff for us to have fun.
Oh, we also both have said we wish we'd gotten the "off road" package to raise the trailer up some. I think this year that's part of the "adventure package"?

RE: vrv toyhauler

I don't know if this info helps you any, but we have a VRV from Livin Lite - a 6x15, and the inside floor, wall to wall, measures 5ft 7in.
Since the VRV you're looking at says "Quicksilver", that's made by Livin Lite.
It's so hard to order these, since you can't go around exploring a bunch of different sizes, models w/ various options, etc.
