RE: Generator

Most people ask the neighbor what time of day will it be okay to run genny to charge up......I try and run mine mid day when most folks are gone......I like the champion 4000 ...... for the cost and output.....you can run it 24/7 at the flying J s......since the trucks are running all the time.....good luck.....

RE: Bed tonneau covers

I like my Ionic 3 fold cover - I have an 8 ft bed.....was reasonable and so far has held up fine and works great for me....I doubt if it would be practical on less than 8 ft bed.....but was very reasonable $ wise....light wt so fits in basement if need to store.....

RE: Is surge supressor necessary?

Most think of surge and high voltage, which they protect against .... but it is low voltage over a few times that causes a lot of eletrical equipment failures.....and when they fail....we wonder why???? Do you use a water pressure regulator? Same reason.....most electric surge protectors shut down at 108 V.....before voltage gets low enough to do damage....damage is cumlative so will take several times of small unnoticeable damage before the equipment fails....good luck....

RE: 17 amp inverter draw and voltage drops to 12.2?

V x A = Watts i.e. 12.2 x 17 = 207.4 if you are measuring 120V would be 207.4 / 120 = 1.7 A check wattage on TV and should be around 200W.....good luck

RE: Fifth wheel

We got a 2011 2500 HD 6.0 3.73 to tow our 8500 5 er...does just great mtns (eastern) or flat....10 mpg w/ac running...in mtns.... We feel gas the way to go pulling less than 10k....plus cheaper than diesel and easier to find on the Blue Ridge.....a lot of campers complained up there that they had to go over 40 miles one way for diesel....we run 56-58 mph to stay within tire speed limits and better mileage..12 mpg if you watch your rpms on the flat and 16-18 when not towing if keep it around 55 mph...We feel the longer the wheel base the better....so have crew cab w 8 ft bed....good luck

RE: 30 amp meter

Why not just buy a Surge Guard from CW when on sale and use a discount coupon....they read volts amps and shut off if low or high voltage is detected.....and auto start after 3 minutes .... that is nice when cold rain is coming down.....since repetitive low volts is one of the biggest problems....you might save some things over time from failing.....good luck

RE: Tow capacity

How often on here do you here my truck is way to big for towing..... IMO bigger bigger bigger......is always better.....having a TV too small is not safe.....everyone seems to look at tow rating, instead of weight and speed. Exceeding weight and speed limits is unsafe...and possible to do with big truck or little truck....so study all the info for every piece of the combined unit that supports weight and moves....ST tire should be operated at 80% of max limit at max cold tp...just one example....rims and bearings also have limits. Good luck be safe

RE: Gross Axle Weight Ratings?

put a 1000 lbs behind the trailer axles and you probably won t have 3300 pin wt....then you will be able to add lbs more to the truck in various places.

RE: Basement weight directly added to pin?

Just think of trailer as tetter totter.......with trailer axles being the pivot point....and one end of tetter totter the pin....the more weight you have on the pin side = more weight on the pin and the front axle....CCat and get weights on everything loaded to camp and you will then know how to adjust load.

RE: New truck break in period.

Speed was important too in break in per owners manual....500 miles under 55 mph.....no load....then I pull 3k trailer 500 miles @55 mph then started pulling 5 er after a 1000....oil changes as recommended per dealer....I took it to dealer after it hit 2k for oil change and they recommeded leave as per computer as break in oils needed to do the job they were in there for.....taking out at 2k was too soon for the breakin oils to do the job.....good luck....

RE: ROTATING TIRES

On a car with radials they do not X them.....my trailer has radials, so would definitely ask a tire man.....or just swap them on same side front to rear....rear to front same side.......good luck

RE: Rubber Roof Treatment

I asked my dealer what they use....BEST Rubber roof cleaner/treatment/uv protector....it says 1 gallon will treat will do one 30 ft unit three times....if ya believe that....guy that does them at dealer said just get cheap sponge mop to apply and scrub...that way none wasted.....I have not tried it yet....but soon as it quits raining I am thinking of it or waiting till the pollen quits falling.....good luck

RE: can we pull this fifth wheel

Bigger is always better for towing and safety.....more pin wt is always good....1/2 tons are limited to a small amount of pin wt .. 3/4 T is a minimum for 5th whl.....gas okay under 10k diesel over 10k Towing is never an issue-stopping and axle weight is always the issue

RE: Worried about voiding warranty with DH Work

Call the dealer and follow his advice while unit is under warranty....he will tell you whether to bring it in or take a look....good luck

RE: Organizing ideas for 5er

Drink wine!!!! Most stores have a 6 bottle carry bag if you buy 6 bottle for free.....Publix has a 4 bottle bag.....we have lots and lots of those bags as they make the best storage....and carry well...stack good when loaded...perfect for almost anything from canned goods to tools....

RE: Loseing air in tire

Ten pounds over a winter does not seem like much to lose....if tire has air in it.....if not leaking try another fill gas.....on the one tire would only be about $5 to fill and see what that does....

RE: countering pin weights

More weight on the pin has always been better for me if do not exceed RAWR....along with other weights....try and keep ST tires at 80% of posted tire weights....and drive within the speed ratings. Rear axle trailer tire weight will increase as you move wt aft....keep cold tire pressure at max posted.....good luck.....

RE: Tire Age

No good data ever on tires....everyone drives a different speed and with different loads....asking campers in campground you find that most drive at or above speed limits for tires....and a good portion are over grossing the tires....ST and Passenger tires are two completely different things....not to mention underinflation....when sitting or driving...people pull 5 ers with half tons putting a lot more weight on the tires of the trailer, instead of the tires on the TV....date on tire should always be limiting factor....3-5 yrs depending on how tire was treated....remember ST should only carry 80% of the weight posted on the tire and max pressure.....most people load them heavier....and drive them faster than the tire speed limit.
