RE: Avion camper rebuilds - dozens of photos

What a beautiful job! You should feel really proud of that level of craftsmanship. I also think you may be talking about the magnets that hold open the overhead cabinet doors. You can see them in this old photo of my Avion:

On another note, the 67 Avion is now in the shop for a thorough stress test of its systems. I hope to get it back next week for the finish.

Steve,
Plans are firming up for our trip to "Flag". Thanks for going to the trouble to corral this bunch.

RE: Avion camper rebuilds - dozens of photos

If the scissor steps reach the ground you will not have the torsion issue . Garry's steps are fully suspended and only supported by the floor . Also note his substantial floor framing . I would not hang a 3 or 4 tread suspended stair from a standard Avion floor .
I know what you mean. My coach had a cracked frame around the door as well as serious floor issues as a result of the unsupported steps that are OEM. I fully intend to set the steps on the ground or a support of some sort.

I think I understand your answer: there is a small distance between the bottom of the steps and the hitch. I also assume you mean when the steps are tucked away? Are you using a tow bar extension? I want to pull my Suzuki Samurai and I checked with Reddog (the resident expert on all things Samurai). Wayne suggested that I use an 18" or 24" extension. He also cautioned me to keep the tow bar parallel to the ground between the camper and the toad. Has this been your experience with the clearances with the Avion? I'll ask you later if you've towed your boat with the camper on the truck...

RE: Avion camper rebuilds - dozens of photos

Gary,
I saw your comment on another thread about installing the steps on the camper. We're doing an install tomorrow using the dreaded scissor steps. (Heh) We are really aware of the "torsional" issue as you put it, the cantilever effect of stairs at the extreme end of the coach exerting pressure on the floor.
We have fashioned a plate that will be secured under the floor and fastened with elevator bolts. My question is this: are you able to use your receiver for a hitch extension? How much clearance is needed? We've measured many times, but the coach is not on the truck, etc and we could be off an inch or so, which is the same as a mile.

The end caps are the fiberglas pieces at the front and back of your camper.
Could have fooled me. In fact it did. I was puzzling out "end caps". I decided that everyone was talking about the rail at the beginning of the cab over. Its really funny that sometimes we think we are following along a discussion - and it turns out we're not :S
Maybe someday we can post an official Avion vocabulary.

If you do paint, Zolatone was the OEM in my camper. They're still in business.

RE: Avion camper rebuilds - dozens of photos

Ticki when you say the "end caps" are you talking about the areas directly behind the top rail of the entrance to the cab over - or "handrail? If so, its where we are putting Corian. The handrail is made of a flexible material that we fastened with an adhesive. I painted it with an aerosol spray that is favored by graffiti artists.
Here is the Corian about to be set in place:
http://i739.photobucket.com/albums/xx38/dgorton/corian-1_zpsedc0fcab.jpg
And a shower bar that holds the shower head and soap rack that we put in this afternoon. Its an off the shelf product, but much shorter vertically than most shower bars. you can also get other accessories for it such as a mirror.

RE: Avion camper rebuilds - dozens of photos

Inspiring work! We're starting to crank up here again. I plan to get the steps in place, the corners on the curve of the shelf replaced in Corian, and a bath bar for shower head and soap. I'll post photos when we get it done, which I hope is real soon. We're loading the camper Friday for its trip to the local RV dealer, Camper Supply in Carterville, Illinois. I've asked them to test all of the systems and add a charge line from the alternator. No doubt they'll find issues that we'll have to address. Better now than on the road.
Spring is coming and we want to be ready. Especially for the meet up in Flagstaff.

RE: Avion camper rebuilds - dozens of photos

Thats very impressive. As Ticki noted, its been a long road for you, so its good to see real progress I bet. I was wondering two things:
1) In what manner did you apply the insulation and did you leave an airspace?
2) Did you attempt to insulate the ribs. It looks like you did from the photo, but I can't quite make it out.
If you leave it as aluminum finish that would be very interesting, though I think it would be somewhat difficult upkeep. And my hat is off to you for the effort in the fit and finish. I can imagine how tedious and exacting the effort to fit the plates must be.

Avion68C11 that is a terrific set up with the vintage truck as well. As mentioned in another post, Cayo in Michigan may be able to help with your issues.

Does anyone have a picture of what the trim looks like around the door ?
If you mean the interior of the backdoor, here are two views as we were restoring paint...and removing grimy fingerprints (heh)

RE: The story of Bear...and his eulogy

Bear was clearly a special dog. But his life, and death, in the hands of a master storyteller like Whazoo elevates Bear into a special realm. Would we all be given the grace along with the ability and courage to tell the stories of our lives. We would be especially blessed, as is Whazoo.

As much as I love a death defying canyon hike with the best of you, are you sure our guide is willing and available? I thought he was moving in the spring or might not be available?? I dunno, just don't want to get people's hopes up especially if they are traveling great distances.
You're absolutely right and I shouldn't have spoken out of turn. Thanks for the reminder. And thanks to Seldomseen for what appears to be a great possibility.

RE: Have a 2007 or newer diesel and deleting. Think again.

I think this has been a good and informative discussion. I also believe it is reasonable to do a little venting at times, without alienating our fellow Forum members. So far so good.
I think that people who go to the trouble to buy a truck camper with its "go anywhere do anything" capability are some of the best and truest conservationists. Why else to buy these unique machines with 4 wheel drive, solar power and self contained systems except to get out into nature?
I believe that everyone here values the environment and wants to be good stewards of the earth. Look at the reports from Whazoo or Seldom Seen or Sleepy or anyone else for that matter.
Our carbon footprint is minimal compared to some of the monster rigs I have seen in RVs. So there should not be any question about our motivation...we differ on our outlooks, that's all. Its precisely because we enjoy solitude, camping and the great outdoors that we may resent encroaching regulations, or over reach by giant corporations, or any other impediment to our lifestyles. That's not because we're selfish, and I apologize for speaking for others, but its because our experience has shown there is a broad welcoming America in its vast spaces.
Heh. In the RV world, we're the cowboys and cowgirls.

RE: Avion camper rebuilds - dozens of photos

Dennis, we wired in a small fan on the curve of the bulkhead. Also a wire to the top of the interior cabinet next to the couch in case I place a table lamp there. You may not have a similar layout. In the photo you can see the fan roughed in on the left. The cabinet is on the right. We also extended a 12V to the rear opening on the roof for a Fantastic Fan. The rest of your mods sound right, but its hard to know from a list. We are putting a lot of lines in the rear cabinets to power wifi, radios, whatever. We also put in 2 aux power outlets on the face of the forward cabinet along with a radio. The aux is to power computers or charge phones, etc.The other consideration at this point would be solar power lines.

RE: Avion camper rebuilds - dozens of photos

There have been several wiring diagrams in this string, though I have no idea what page they are on. However, there is nothing like a "new style converter/charger setup" that is attached to any of the diagrams to my knowledge. Its quite a slog, but you may find more information going back through the string. Its too bad its not searchable, but it is what it is.
