RE: Avion camper rebuilds - dozens of photos

There have been several wiring diagrams in this string, though I have no idea what page they are on. However, there is nothing like a "new style converter/charger setup" that is attached to any of the diagrams to my knowledge. Its quite a slog, but you may find more information going back through the string. Its too bad its not searchable, but it is what it is.

Hmmm. Too bad that Edge couldn't just buy carbon credits from Al Gore.

If I had one gutted I would be more concerned with thermally isolating the ribs from the skin than filling the wall cavity . I think that you are correct in many ways. The rib structure is a perfect sink for cold (and hot) thermal transfer. If the ribs were isolated, it might make a big difference. The insulation between the shells may serve as much as for noise dampening as it does for thermal regulation.

RE: Avion camper rebuilds - dozens of photos

I may not have been clear about the inner and outer shell of the Avion. They are held together by struts that are connected by rivets from above and below. In the resulting interior space - between the shells- an insulating layer was laid down. But it purposely did not fill the entire void. It only adheres to the outer shell. The resulting airspace is what I was referring to in terms of applying insulation. Then there were the issues of "rigid and not flexible" material in the closed cell. I wonder if you can address those concerns? thanks.

RE: Avion camper rebuilds - dozens of photos

With regards to insulating your campers with spray foam from either DOW's Goodstuff or from Spray Foam Kits I would advise against it. I've been interested in "green" products for some time in the house restorations that I do - so I am also curious about their application in the Avion camper. The application method is a pressure filled hose that is blown or sprayed onto a surface. I am wondering several things: 1) The R factor for closed cell MD - C 200 Icynene is 6.75 per inch. 2) It is a "rigid, not flexible composition". This leads me to wonder about the precision of application in an airspace between the outer and inner shells of the Avion - overall maybe 1 inch. And then applying the material so that some airspace was retained? So if it covered half of that space it's R value would be maybe 3 or so. Am I correct? And then the question of rigidity of the application would have to be addressed. Would flexing cause failure in the insulation? Or conversely would rigidity cause issues with the riveted surface plates of aluminum?

RE: Avion camper rebuilds - dozens of photos

gfleming - You've certainly put your finger on an important issue: the interior space between the outer shell and the cabin walls. There is insulation that adheres to one of the walls, leaving an airspace. I would presume under any rebuild, if you have a choice of where to place the insulation, the first concern would be reducing the amount of condensation. I certainly wouldn't have any type of material that would be absorbent since leaks inevitably happen. Both of those concerns argues for insulating the area closest to the cabin. At least that sounds right to me. Anyone else? Also, glad to have you aboard the Avion string. DG

Steve, Whazoo just wrote me the same thing. Sorry about the miscommunication. He also says that the original idea was Bryan (bka) and Brian (btgraphics), so I should have acknowledged them as well. I don't know what happened to my communication skills - it was Whazoo who was drinking beer at lunch - not me.That was probably my mistake.

RE: Avion camper rebuilds - dozens of photos

There is something I'd like to mention to our Avion community, and others. I emphasize that it is tentative and may not happen. Over the holidays I met with Whazoo (Dave) and his wife Lynn. We talked about gathering at the Overland Expo, May 17-19, Flagstaff, Arizona. Subsequently I was in touch with Steve (sabconsulting) in England, and he is definitely going to be there as well. Then Steve said that Silversand was going to be in the region and might attend. So, I have also made plans (if humanly possible) to get out to Flagstaff for the meet up. The Expo is real expensive so Whazoo and I talked about getting reservations at a nearby campground and attending on a day pass. The idea, I suppose, is that we'll circle the TCs somewhere for a Whazoofest. That's all I know at this point, but I wanted to pass it along. D

I don't think in these terms about the topics. I will admit that sometimes they can be annoying, or banal, but I move on to things that interest me. On the other hand, I do find it a little amusing to raise the subject. Lets hope it stays light and fun...otherwise

Thanks for your kind words of affirmation. I see now that we have 1,000 comments on this thread and have just turned over a 100 pages, not that I'm counting. But, it is a testament, as we have all remarked, to the Avion. Here we go to the next 1,000. D

RE: Camper for '12 Toyota Tacoma , which to get ???

There has been some discussion on this Forum about the Livin Lite and Camp Lite campers. My impression, though its not first hand, is that the Camplite is a good product. I think that you have a great idea to match it with a sturdy pickup like the Tacoma. It should "go anywhere" and do it cheaply and quickly. Parking issues, weight, and other annoyances with the larger camper/truck combinations is not a concern. Take a look at Steve's (Sabconsulting) rig in England where there is little choice in size except small. He has turned it into a tiger that maneuvers the Sahara Desert - self contained with solar power.

RE: Avion camper rebuilds - dozens of photos

I remain in awe of an America that made things: things of quality and durability. The Avion was built in Michigan at a time when the industrial powerhouse of the Midwest was the envy of the world. Every thing in my Avion truck camper, from the fridge to the stove to the lights to the Zolatone paint was created and manufactured in the USA - and much of it in Michigan. No doubt the success of the Airstream, inspired by the aircraft industry, informed the emerging Avion brand. There were many competitors, but Airstream and Avion appear to have stood out and weathered the intervening years. Ironically, as I rebuild my Avion, I find myself with LEDs as well as the stove and refrigerator made in China; radios from Japan; who knows where the Corian is manufactured.... Grand Rapids and Detroit are in profound trouble. I am astonished at today's truck campers that range up to $95,000, a dually with slides and generators and all the comforts of home. The reality is that they are versatile and a tremendous asset to a vigorous lifestyle. But no one should think of them as something Pop loads up on Friday for a cheap week-end for the family. Today's campers are unlike the modest ones I used to see in the vast parking lots of aerospace plants in Long Beach,California. In those days a working class Dad loaded his camper on Friday before work, and hit the road after his shift - with mom and kids onboard - headed for the mountains or the Desert as Jerry Dunphy used to say. "Truck campers" meant that you had a truck, something that only (or mostly) working people owned for their employment. I have no disagreement whatsoever with people who choose the comfort of today's truck campers or 5ers or Class A's or whatever. God knows I'll do the same some day. But, for now I am interested in preserving something important. When I sand the birchwood from the northern forest, I am tracing the hands of the original workers. When I am replacing the rivets or replacing bolts, it is their hands that guide me. Rebuilding these Avion TCs is an homage to the craftsmen who shouldered our nation, who fought the wars and who cared for their families. We recognize, I hope, that in this aluminum camper we actually honor the spirit of America.

Yeah, this thing just took off. I guess there was an unexplored interest in the Avion TC. Also this Forum is so easy to access, with good moderators. But, I am also amazed at the size of the thread.

Marietta, I'm not sure if my tanks are what you are talking about. There appear to be a number of changes from my coach to yours. However, if this is what you are referring to, then you can have them for free. As to the Forum, I think they frown on any sorts of sales. http://i739.photobucket.com/albums/xx38/dgorton/tanks.jpg

Felix, I definitely like your style. First, a little walking around then some beer. Next, a little walking around and some more beer. I don't know if Sweet Jane and I could keep up, but we'd sure try! Thanks for the great photos and the OomPah band.

69, don't you think he should walk his issues past someone who is real knowledgable about propane and furnaces? I was lucky enough to talk to a fellow at the local propane dealership and he was familiar with every furnace that I could imagine. It gave me a great deal of confidence in my solutions to the tanks and the heater. I think for many of us, me included, old gas lines, old tanks, and old furnaces raise real caution flags.

Welcome aboard! You'll find a lot of encouragement from this Avion community and expertise as well. Believe me - you'll need both in a restoration. It's a tough frustrating thing at times, but worth it. Don't hesitate to ask any question.
