RE: 2013 Trailer Life Directory

Interesting observations, thanks. I wonder how they combined Trailer Life and Woodalls it must have been hard to decide what to keep and drop. Trailer Life is the one I bought every year or so. I preferred it over Woodalls. Is the 2005 issue the most recent you purchased or it it your favorite?

RE: 2013 Trailer Life Directory

Doesn't make much sense to combine two big camping directories and have less campground information. We buy these books to choose campgrounds. Less information on public campgrounds is not an improvement.
For the first time ever I got rid of my AAA campbooks before getting the new one and was shocked to find the little white AAA ones replaced by regional Woodalls. AAA gave excellent directions, acreage and number and type of sites, what the campground had to offer, and gave a rating to the left for scenic-which I really appreciated. The Woodalls are bigger to carry and concentrate on the money making private campgrounds.
It is good that you kept your 2005 edition I gave all of mine away when the new one came.
What do you like in the new combined book? There must be some things that are better.

RE: 2013 Trailer Life Directory

I ordered our in early October for $9.95 and had to pay $6.00 for shipping that was later free. It was promised by Dec 31. It is not here and we leave for a long trip tomorrow. I watched for delivery every day.......Very disappointed, wasted my money as I cannot take it with me and if it comes after I leave a long time package on the porch is not a good sign.

RE: Memberships

We have Passport America, AAA, Good Sam, Escapees, We found that those that honor Good Sam usually also give 10% discounts to AAA, AARP, ect so we wonder why we pay for Good Sam. Good Sam and Escapees also have big rallies for their members that are fun and informative. I have tried KOA and Yogi Bear 10% off memberships in the past and did not find them worth it to us. It takes awhile with memberships to get your original fees back in discounts before it pays to have the membership. With Passport America you get half off campsites so you can get your membership back in a few nights. We have noticed with Passport America that they have great new campgrounds and some never go back campgrounds. We complained about one and nothing changed. It sounds like a fancy resort in the listing and it is a old 1960's dump with a few crowded rv spots.
The membership resort parks that you buy into are more destination parks that are usually out in the country away from highway routes. They are not convenient for cross country travel over night stops. It depends what kind of traveler you plan to be whether this type of membership would suit your needs. If you do decide this is what you want everyone recommends that you buy a used membership for thousands less than buying new under high pressure sales.
Advice? Just start camping and see what types of parks you like. Watch for discount offers for memberships and ask others if they are worth it. Also if you plan to stay in an area for more than a couple nights ask about weekly or monthly or even seasonal rates they are much cheaper than the daily rate. Example a 55+ fancy resort park out west charges 40+ a night daily but monthly it is $650.00 (plus electric/trash fees).

RE: How do you plan your routes and stops?

I worried about that too. We have a 33FKS which makes us 58 ft long with a V10 so we use reg. gas so we have to use regular gas pumps. Gas stations that are parallel to the road are easier to maneuver than the ones that face the gas station. We traveled 5,000 miles and did ok. I use Exit Now or The Next Exit to find bigger stations. Often Costco and some Sams have easy access. We stop at Pilots and Flying J if they look accessible. Many people at the Good Sam Rally complained to them about needing more room at the pumps to get in and out.
We have not had any problems in campgrounds but I call ahead and read reviews if I can. Get the book "Big Rigs Best Bets" it is updated yearly. We have not camped in many old State Parks//State Forests yet. I am leary of older parks with narrow roads and lots of trees. We do more pull thru's now.
We are too long for Cracker Barrels RV parking places. We like Culvers and can usually park in their lots across some spaces at the back or sides. Sometimes we park at a shopping center and walk to a restaurant. I prefer not to eat at truck stops but some times it is just easier when you are trying to get in the miles.

RE: slow slide

Could be a bad switch. Our bedroom slide was intermittent and with a new $6.00 switch now is fast and smooth.

RE: Selling an RV. Suggestions?

Though we had ours on Craigslist our buyer came from a drive by. We cleaned out the trailer and shined it in and out so it was immaculate. I waxed the sinks and shower with Zymol car wax. The carpets were cleaned. I left matching pillows, and decor. On a Friday night in September we put our trailer in our front yard parked at an angle. The next day 8 couples stopped to take a look. The next day one came back with a deposit.
I was out in the trailer early in the day and left it with the door open and flyers explaining everything about the trailer on the table and a copy in the window with the sales price. We kept watching and when someone stopped we went out there. Keeping watch got old fast and my husband had the idea to put the baby monitor out there. When we heard voices we went out. That worked great. I think the open door helped entice people to stop and have a look. Also it was a very beautiful fall weekend. We live on a county road that gets lots of traffic.

What about using a ground fault interrupter on your power cord at the box?

RE: rust stains

I used Goop the white hand cleaner in the round tub to get rust off of Gel Coat siding. I would try it on the aluminum. You could also check out Iron Out it can be used on houses that have been sprayed by sprinklers. Read the label.
