RE: UP Michigan Porkies

I love the sound of the Presque Isle state campground, with beautiful scenery. I love the sound of the modern (read: flush toilets) at Union but I hear the campground itself is pretty barren.
We camped at Union for almost a week this summer. Our site at Union was not that good - large open grass area, not especially level, with one elec pedestal for 2 sites - located 50' away from the site. There are several sites very close to the Lake and those were very nice - we'd go back if we could get one of them! Of course, they were crowded as people from the not-so-nice sites would walk down (and through) some of the nicer sites.
The park was well run, not much late-hour noise, it was clean and well maintained.
Naturalist was OK, but not nearly as professional as other parks that we have enjoyed (in Wisc and Mn).
We tried hard to get into Presque Isle - but they were very full. If you are in an RV, try to get the loop where generators are allowed (to the right as you enter the camp grounds) as those sites are more accommodating to larger rigs. Sites to the left are great for tenting and maybe a pop-up.
Personally, we enjoyed Fort Wilkins SP in the NW corner of the UP much more.
This post is my personal opinion from just one experience there. Maybe check www.rvparkreviews.com to see what others think....or other posts here.

RE: Water heater valves

I agree - it sure looks like the "T" connectors and the Valves should be swapped. If this is new, it is a dealer problem for sure!

RE: Power Boosters (voltage boosters)

I got Franks and am delighted. It has automatic level switching so the output voltage stays in a narrow range. I've had it over two years and it has worked great whenever I've needed it.

RE: TomTom IPhone application

How was the iPhone battery life? That was a killer for me. Then I needed a power plug ... It is nice for a pinch, but it won't replace the Garmin ontop of my dash!

RE: Whats up with Clorox?

I was under the impression that the Clorox "smell" was artifically added (see the label) because the weak concentration of sodium hypoclorite didn't smell real strong. I got an off-brand of bleach with exactly the same concentration of NaHCl and it had almost no smell.
The other factor might be our noses aren't as good at sniffing now as they were a few years ago due to age.

RE: 6Volt Batteries - What Brand?

I got mine at Sams Club - same specs as Trojan 105's but significantly less expensive. Working great - in their 2nd year.

Check out Henry's Lake State Park in Idaho. It was our base when we did Yellowstone and it was great!

RE: Corp of Engineers CG

Shhhhh..... Stop this topic before every one learns how nice the COE campgrounds are and then I won't be able to get a non-reserved space anytime I want it. Then I have to go to some poorly maintained, loosely managed, and unpleasant campground where the facilities are not good and the sites are awkward! Yeah, we like the COE campgrounds because the ones we've tried are well maintained, well supervised, very pleasant, located in lovely areas, and have great sites and facilities. Now... Please... Stop telling other people about this!!!!!

RE: Disappointment - Michigan State Parks - Mclain

We spent 4 days at the Porcupine Mountains State Park in the SW corner of Michigan's UP. I was not real happy - the park was certainly no where near as nice as State Parks in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, or Colorado. We were given a large open field, not level, with one electric post way up on a steeply sloping part of the field, that serviced two "sites". I had to take a 100' extension cord to reach it from the RV. One benefit - the site was large - but it had no shade or even a gravel drive - we parked on the grass. The hiking was not memorable. The scenery along the Lake was beautiful - but that was about it. Out of State usage fees along with campsite fees made this less attractive than the other states I mentioned. Your experience may vary - but that was mine at that state park.

RE: Blank Cd's & Dvd's ?

I recorded over 100 DVDs for parents of kids in a musical production I recorded. I did a lot of research to determine what type of DVD would work for recording video for TV to be played right on home DVD players hooked to TV sets. It was suggested that I use DVD+R by Verbatim. I got 5 containers of 25 DVD+R's each and spent several days burning them on a LG DVD burner using Nero. When done these were distributed to about 60-ish parents. There was not a bad DVD in the batch. The Verbatim's played on a huge variety of home DVD players. I was pretty pleased and that is all I use now.

RE: DW's computer broke

When it shut off, was it totally off (no green lights indicating power) or was just the screen dark. If power was on - you could have lost the screen lighting. To tell, shut your computer completely off (really it is best to unplug the AC adapter and remove the battery pack for about 2 minutes) then reboot to see if it comes back. Watch for disk light activity (you can hear that) and see if your screen lights up - if it does not light up, then you've lost the screen illumiation. You can also test that by shining a very bright light onto the screen and looking for a very dim refection of the screen by looking a little off-center.
If this doesn't help, tell us more about your symptoms.

RE: Northern Upper Penninsula of Michigan questions.

We are in the Porcupine Mountain Wilderness State Park this very moment -having a grand time! The Union campground is big rig friendly although I needed to use several 2x10 blocks to get level. Nice hiking, beautiful waterfalls and rivers, great walking along the shores of Lake Superior. Nice visitor center too. We are just west of Silver City in the UP.

RE: Tethering with AT&T cell phone

Yes, I have a Nokia with voice-only on AT&T. If I tether it to my laptop via USB, it works just great but is horifficly expensive - something like 50-cents/minute or is it 50-cents per kilobyte... I forget.... but for emergency use it is better than nothing. I called AT&T and learned that I can have the data plan activiated by phoning customer service. That is something like $60/mo additiona (with my plan). However, they told me I could have the data plan turned off any time I want and they will prorate the montly charges. I've not tried it, but it sounds like a fair deal.
I normally carry a Sprint Aircard and I just love. In the few areas where it just won't work, I tether to my Blackberry via USB. That is on T-Mobile service. So, yup, when I'm out in the RV I have three network coverage (Sprint, T-Mobile, and AT&T). I carry a Wilson repeater with a 30' antenna if I'm not close to a cell-tower. It is rare for me to be in a local without any service at all!
But... tethering the AT&T Nokia works fine.

RE: Duh...When to fill holding tank?

We fill before leaving home. Our home water tastes great - some campground water tastes awful. Also our home water is lightly chlorinated which keeps our fresh water tank and plumbing --- fresh!
When we run out of home water, we filter as we fill from campground water. That helps some. We use a $20 inline Walmart filter (blue cylinder with hose attachments).

RE: Flush King use and ratings

Well, I sure like mine. I like to see what comes out of black and grey... then back fill with fresh water... then see what comes out.. It is amazing. Then I put a few gallons back into grey and black when I'm all done. FK makes it easy. I've had it for 3 years now and it has kept my tanks quite clean.
I only use it when dumping. I'd not use it at a site as it does take a lot of fresh water. I'd not hook up a drinking water spigot to the FK for sanitary reasons. Therefore, I only flush using water at the dump location.

RE: generator exhaust extender pipe?

I got flexible aluminum exhaust tubing for a clothes dryer vent - crimped one end around the gen's exhaust pipe. The 4" tube prevents back pressure - seems to work great and was most inexpensive.

Agreed, filing a police report is a good idea from a legal perspective. Shows this is a serious, and independently verified, accident.
