RE: Camp Hatteras NC OBX

Hope the weathe is better for you then; we are at Onslow Beach south of Hatteras and this weather is pounding us. Second time I've been in coastal NC in November and dealt with a Nor'easter. We will be in OBX next few weeks but not Hatteras. Love Camp Hatteras - a little pricey, but a nice place.

Thanks for Freedom, Veterans - thankks today and every day!

A big shout-out of thanks to all the veterans (my hubby included) who have served to keep us all safe and free. Too bad we are stuck in he 5'er in this Nor'easter with rain and wind - would rather be able to get out for the day. Nice that so many businesses are honoring Vets today with free meals, discounts, etc. Too bad weather is cancelling so many Veteran's Day parades and events in the southeast. Join me in saying THANKS.

RE: Thanksgiving camping...where you going?

Outer Banks with family (luckily they have a big back yard for us to stay in). We spend the whole month of November in NC; currently at Onslow Beach, Camp LeJeune, Jacksonville, NC.

RE: Morgan Resorts

We stayed with our camping club at Morgan Resorts - Endless Caverns in Luray, VA in September. Although one post here was unhappy with their site and water pressure, that would probably be because this park is on the side of a mountain (caverns are usually under mountains) and that is why the roads go uphill thru the park and also why there is a tanker to supply water higher up. That being said, our overall visit was great - the camp hosts went out of their way to assure that our clumb had everything we needed. Major money is being spent on this park - a couple hundred sites being added with full hookups including WIFI which worked very well for us. The pool is one of the nicest and cleanest I've ever seen in an RV park. They are also putting in a large catch and release trout pond to open in the spring. My only problem was that we got charged twice for the night we checked in because we got there a day early. I have a letter of "credit" for one night to use later on instead of a refund. One of the reasons was the difference in the actual Endless Caverns phone number and the Morgan Resorts number and having to pay our total amount due in advance of arrival; then it didn't show on their computer and we were charged th 2nd time. I don't mind paying a deposit for a reservation, but i do not like having to pay full amount up front.

RE: Terrible News - Shooting at Fort Hood

This is such a tragedy. My heart goes out to the victims and their families. I have a problem with how someone who was argumentative, hostile, refusing to be deployed, and, that along with his "name" and religious and political belief could EVER be a Major in the U.S.Army and have authority over anyone. Being a Major, he could have resigned from service if he was unhappy. But he chose to make a political statement by killing and wounding innocent solders. I was amazed today at the security on a major military base - We checked in today at Camp LeJeune Onslow Beach RV park. When we entered thru the main gate at the base (about noon), we were 'waved thru' and were never asked for our military ID cards. Yes, we have a DOD sticker, but we have always had to show our ID cards - both of us - and we have even had to undergo random 'search' in an under our vehicle when entering other military bases. But here, no - just keep the traffic moving and keep going as you wave to the MP. And this is security? Scarrrrry world we live in.

RE: The Snuggie vs. Slanket vs. Freedom Blanket vs. Blankoat

Sure do love mine. Also love my electric throw = smaller than a blanket = just right for a recliner. Got my snuggie on now. My only issue is that the sleeves are WAY to long for me. Thinking about getting a couple of the Pet Snuggies for the dogs = we have a couple of old dogs that are cold natured.

RE: Can Veterans use military campgrounds?

Amen - we are actually headed to Onslow Beach at Camp LeJeune = $15 per night with full hooks, CATV and WiFi. Now where can you get that kind of rate at a private run campground? NOT! Usually at least $40 per night. We stay at military ones often = safe, clean, no noise or usavory types. We always meet some great fellow retirees. It's one of the best perks of being retired military (aside from the medical benefits).

RE: Country Way, Luray, VA - Anyone else here?

I think they originated in Turkey centuries ago. They are round buildings with a lattice-like frame and then covered by fabric or skins (now days they use canvas). They have a roof that sort of goes up into a peak in the center. This one had plastic "windows" in the canvas covering around the side of the building and a door on each side of the round frame. On this one there is a nice deck built around the side of it also. This one is heated by a big space heater and has a large ceiling fan up high in the center ceiling.

RE: Country Way, Luray, VA - Anyone else here?

Yes - they are still here and have made many improvements. Many more sites added, free Wifi with great signal and a new office building where you check in. New pavilion / deck area and also a Yurt which is very nice. Actually our camping club played board games and had a covered dish dinner in the Yurt yesterday and even tho it was cold out, it was heated and cozy.

RE: Country Way, Luray, VA - Anyone else here?

Too funny!!! Yes, we are "here" in site #48. Nice campground and much better than it was when we were here a few years ago. Many improvements have been made. How long are you here? We are leaving for home tomorrow (Monday).

RE: Too Many Flies !!!

Sounds like you need to borrow my electronic fly-swatter!!! I ordered it off Ebay although lots of the RV supply places sell them - looks like a tennis racket with "D" Cell batteries. You push the little button that charges the grid and swing - good for flies, moths, mosquitoes, etc. Sure came in handy in OBX. Hate to break your bubble but those things are about as useful as the X-Ray glasses to see through womens clothing :) I've got one also. So far ours has worked = but it's new and batteries fresh. It really did a number on the bugs in OBX. Not much good with gnats since they can go thru the grids.

RE: Big Brother?????

Lets see the drivers license has his date of birth and you paid with a credit card so they have the CC number and date of birth? Maybe even the place of birth if the clerk is any good at building relationships.... I would watch the online charges to the card over the next few weeks. Even the state parks only want the plate number on the toad. Some places I would worry about what you mentioned, but not here. We stay here really often - learned to know all the people working here and the owner so I don't think there is anything shady about it. Either it's a County / or State of VA rule, or it's federal - maybe they got some sort of directive and misinterpreted it. I'm going over shortly and question theh whole thing and then talk to the owner.

RE: Big Brother?????

We paid by debit card from bank. We've stayed here many, many times and never had to give info like this. She said it was Homeland Security new rule. I know the guy that owns the campground and want to ask him about it tomorrow when I can catch up with him.

Big Brother?????

We checked into a campground today here in Central Virginia. Lady at the desk said a new "rule" went into effect Sept. 1 from Homeland Security and they needed to have my hubbys drivers license number, make of our truck, and plate number. I know we have had to give plate number before, but never anything else. Has anyone heard anything about this? If this is a new "rule" then I'm thinking the gov't is getting just a bit too nosey.

RE: Wanted Banana Pudding Recipes

My husband was raised in Eastern NC and loves banana pudding too. He also loves peanuts and peanut butter. So, I tried a new "twist" on the old standard and he loved it = and so did everybody else that had some: I simple put peanut butter on the wafers and stuck two together like a sandwich cookie - used that and continued to make my old standard banana pudding recipe. It was great. Sometimes, if I don't have vanilla wafers, I use graham crackers (with or without peanut butter) and one of the best ways I've made it was with some slightly dry / stale banana nut muffins crumbled / sliced instead of any van. wafers. Like so many good standard recipes, there are always ways to vary them to make something unique and keep it from being boring.

RE: williamsburg in December

If retired military, stay at Cheatam Annex Navy Base. Peaceful, clean, full hookups, good size sites, cable tv, golf course and only about 5 miles from all the 'action' - either colonial part, or outlets.

RE: Meatloaf making tip...

This is about the ONLY way I make meatloaf now and it's really easy AND good. All your seasonings are in the Stove Top Stuffing. Only takes minutes to make. It turns out firm and slices easy for serving or leftovers. 1 1/2 to 2 lbs. ground turkey or ground beef 2 eggs, beaten 1 box Stove Top Stuffng - chicken flavor 1 cup water 1/4 cup BBQ sauce or catsup place all ingred. in bowl and blend; shape into loaf in large loaf pan. Can top with additional catsup or BBQ sauce if you like. Bake 350 for an hour or until done.

RE: Ground Beef Cheese Bake

I've made this for years only a different name - recipe I used was called "Husband's Delight" and everyone has always loved it. In fact, kids used to BEG me to make it. Brings back good memories of when they were young. I still make this from time to time. I always made a double batch and froze one for later. It is SOOOOO Good!!!!!
