RE: Suburban / Keystone Cougar

Chris, congrats on the trailer- thats a great floor plan. We need more information on your Suburban- rear axle ratio, max payload, max tow rating, rear axle rating, four or two wheel drive. From the numbers of your trailer it looks like you will be at, near, or possibly over your Suburbans ratings depending on how it is equipped and factors like Donn mentioned- passenger and cargo weight INSIDE the truck. Length 28'0" Width 8'0" Height 11'1" Hitch Weight 850 lbs Dry Weight 6,366 lbs Cargo Weight 1,634 lbs Fresh Water Capacity 60 gals Grey Water Capacity 76 gals Black Water Capacity 38 gals Furnace BTU 30,000 Sleeps 9 Tire Size ST225/75R15D Slides 1 2013 Suburban *Weights and Capacities MAXIMUM TOWING CAPACITY** 8100 lbs. MAXIMUM PAYLOAD** 1526 lbs. GROSS WEIGHT 7200 lbs. CURB WEIGHT 5674 lbs. ANGLE OF APPROACH 16.9 degrees ANGLE OF DEPARTURE 20.5 degrees CARGO CAPACITY, ALL SEATS IN PLACE 45.8 cu.ft. MAXIMUM CARGO CAPACITY 137.4 cu.ft. ** When adequately equipped, which may require engine and/or other drivetrain upgrades. DriveTrain DRIVE TYPE Rear wheel drive TRANSMISSION 6-speed shiftable automatic The 6 speed transmission is great for towing. You likely either have a 3.08 or 3.42 rear axle ratio- hopefully the 3.42. Your trucks actual payload number should be on a yellow sticker inside on the drivers door.

RE: Jayco Jay Flight 28BHS High Tongue Weight?

See if your local dealer will throw a scale under one with the propane tanks full and battery in place.

RE: Towing question

To the OP I will add this regarding the KZ2505. The front storage area is great...but it raises the floor in the bunk room. Therefore your still growing child who is 5'9; will have ZERO headroom up there. My oldest is 5'3" and she finds the lack of headroom in the front bunk area to be very lacking. I would go take a look at this trailer and have your kids check out the bunk area. If all theyre going to do is sleep up there then it wont be a big issue. The old Outback 26RS is identical but keeps the floor in the bunk room even with the rest of the trailer and gives you headroom equal to that in the rest of the trailer. My KZ was weighed coming home from a trip and tipped the scales at 5200lbs. Id say that weight may have fluctuated and probably could have been in the 5500 range at times. The tongue weight was also weighed and if I recall was around 650. I towed with a Dodge Ram for a few years and they have lower payloads than other half tons. I was within 200 lbs of my rear axle rating, but well under my trucks towing capacity. I ended up storing some stuff- loaded cooler, portable grill, inside the trailer to give some more cushion to the rear axle rating. Like I said in my earlier post, a properly equipped Suburban, Expedition (EL) Crew-Cab pickup or as some have mentioned full sized van should pull the KZ just fine as long as you stay within your limits and pack wisely.

RE: Towing question

The KZ is too much for the Explorer. I've towed that same trailer with a Suburban, a Yukon XL, a Ram 1500 and a Sierra half ton. The Sierra tows it the best. A half ton V8 pickup or large SUV with a payload of at least 1500lbs is where u should be.

RE: Rear Queen Slide Bed Measurement

Dano- one thing I should have mentioned with regard to the Frontier 2505- the front bunk area floor is much higher than the rest of the Frontier's floor. That is because KZ placed the fresh water tank under the floor where there is a huuuuge storage area beneath the bunks. Having all that storage is great, but it severely cuts down the headroom in the front bunk area. My oldest daughter is 16 now and is 5'3". She cannot stand upright in the front bunk area anymore. Not so with the Outbacks. Definitely something to consider....

RE: Rear Queen Slide Bed Measurement

Youre about an inch taller than me, I can just barely lie straight across out rear queen slide. Id say the 74x60 measurement from the Outback is about right for the KZ. Mine is in storage at the moment...if it was in the driveway Id have the tape measure out right now! My advice is to actually get inside one and lie down in the bed and see for yourself if you will fit.

RE: What should I do with these tires?

Tow with them and see how they feel. If they do OK keep them. If not buy a set of LTs and put the other ones on CL....someone will buy them up fast

RE: Model/type search

Well, Outbacks had a 26RS with quad bunks, no sofa slideout. I dont believe they make that floorplan anymore. The 28RSDS has one, but is apx 30', but agaun I dont believe they offer that floorplan. I have a KZ Frontier 2505. quad bunks no sofa slideout (same as the 26RS). They no longer offer that floorplan. They do make a Spree 289KS but again is 30'. http://www.kz-rv.com/spree/289KS.html

LOVE how my 5.3/3.42 6 speed tows my TT, which is in the same ballpark as yours weight-wise. Big difference over my Suburban with the 4 speed

RE: kz spree 250s

This is our 8th season with our KZ Frontier; which is the pre-Spree model line. It has held up very well for our family and I would buy another KZ in a heartbeat. The rear slide mechanism is different from the Frontier's but you get a "king" sized bed that goes lengthwise in the slideout, not across like mine so nobody is crawling over the top of anyone to get in/out of bed. Which Spree are you looking at? There is a 220s a 240bhs and a 265ksthat would all work well with your Suburban....Im just not seeing the 250 that you speak of.

RE: Towing capability with a 5.3L v8 Suburban

I am a bit confused as to how we can tow a 6,000 dry weight tt if the tow limit of the Suburban is 8,000. The answer you got was 6000lbs loaded. Id say thats about right having towed our TT below with an 05 Suburban and an 07 Yukon XL. If you are looking at a new Suburban with the 5.3/3.42 rear axle combo that is what my current pickup has and I love how it tows our TT. Way better than either the Burb or Yukon did. You dont mention other factors- kids, dogs, etc which can eat into your payload. Id keep the tongue weight of your trailer around 700lbs or less, the Suburban likely has a payload capacity in the 1400-1500 range. Gotta leave wiggle room for passengers and cargo, although you can keep heavier stuff in the trailer.

RE: Goodbye 2500 Suburban

I doubt that Government Motors would cancel Suburbans, as what would the Secret Service, FBI and other Federal Law Enforcement Agencies buy and drive in Black? If it were up to our "commander" in chief, Chevy Volts, but he's probably too busy to care burning up more jet fuel on AF-1 on anther vacation. Too bad there's no electric airplanes.....
